I wouldn't be surprised if there's an agreement with the authorities. As I understand it he already had a conviction for rape so maybe the authorities were also partly responsible for just taking his word that the daughter had run away to join a cult. If all parties agree to the insanity plea it might avoid an investigation into the police, welfare services etc.

I just hope that he's given some type of severe punishment and not treated by that country's mental health system, to me he's not a conventional "insanity" case, not that i'm saying i'm a psychiatrist or lawyer. The matter involved a lot of planning, this guy was "smart" enough to get away with it for 24 years, and arguably only released the daughter because she no longer was attractive to him. I think once people are found not guilty for this type of thing, it could set an ugly pattern for all types of seriouscriminals whether that be paedophiles, serial killers or whatever, blaming some type of brain disorder and not receiving their dues.

Thats always a possibility JAS, i just hope the Austrian police are above that type of scrutiny and do the right thing and pursue the matter. I've heard he may be charged with murder by neglect for the twin that died. He's obviously committed at least 6 counts of rape plus theres the deprivation of liberty, if he's sentenced cumultively theres no way he should leave prison in anything but a casket.

Totally agree with you...he should get life...and it should be the rest of his natural life. You have to wonder if there's something wrong with society...did this go undiscovered for so long partly due too the demise of the old-fashioned type of community where everyone knew everyone and most of their business...I think things like this would have been much harder to keep hidden in my parents/grandparents day.

Or maybe it's something that's changed in that region of Europe...not quite the same but there is also a dreadful story this week in Germany and it's not the first one from there either.

Thats a terrible story as well JAS. Theres obviously lots of underlying problems in society that cause these types of things.

I must say the Austrian incident to me, is just so bad because the suffering of the girl lasted for 24 years. I cannot comprehend the hell she went through. Thats why i'd be annoyed if the father was able to use an insanity defence and not be dealt with the way he should be.

Fred West, yeah that was an absolute shocker as well. The guy also got to decide his own ultimate fate as well which wasn't the way it should be.

RW I wasn't suggesting for a moment that the rest of the world is immune...and yes it was Fred and Rosemary West in Gloucester IIRC...I also remember only too well us girls being confined to barracks for days at a time when the Yorkshire Ripper started killing non-prostitutes and appeared to be moving further south.

Just seems that in the past few years crimes within families ie the concealing of baby deaths and long term imprisonment have been more frequent in the Germany and Austria region. Maybe thats partly due to the media...we only here what they tell us so if it happens elsewhere and they don't report it we get a skewed picture.

Now here in the UK the biggest problem seems to be that of young teenagers attacking and even killing each other with knives and even occasionally guns. It's not uncommon to hear of someone getting beaten for challenging a gang of kids found tampering with a car of making a nuisance...and I'm talking about 13,14 and 15 yo's and sadly a lot of it is drink and drug related too.

Fred West, and you can draw the same conclusion about society in the UK as anywhere else.

People just don't look out for each other these day. A real shame

What should the lawyer do genius? If there is an insanity defence the lawyer has to pursue it and let the judge decide. If he is found insane your problem is with the law, not the lawyer.

Well genius, i was just putting my point forward that it would "give me the sh1ts" if this guy is able to use an insanity defence in order to avoid what i believe should be coming to him. I'm sorry for giving an opinion genius, quite clearly we all have to be lawyers to have an opinion on the criminal justice system.

It gives me the sh1ts that all Sturt supporters hide behind their illustrious leader instead of rallying around him.

Telstra - storm knocks out our internet connection. They tell us the problem isn't theirs, it's at their end. We do everything to fix it, but can't meaning we're off line for two days. Then they find it is at their end and tells us we're in a queue to be fixed! If you'd given us the right thing from the start - we wouldn't have to be in the queue!
