Keeping up the regular servicing on the car for 10+ years - spending $500 bucks on the exhaust system just before Christmas and now finding out there is a problem with the head and could be anywhere from 600- 1200 bucks to fix the problem... FFS ... what does one do?? get a good second hand car around 10K and maybe take on someone else's problems - buy a new little car around 15k and cop a massive loss in value in the first couple of years or bite the bullet and just pay the big repair bill now hoping (and keeping fingers crossed) that nothing else major goes wrong in the next couple of years (current k's around 210) have had fuel pump etc down as per book.... any pm's offering suggestions or comments will be welcomed.

depends really, if spending $1200 on the car guarantees that it will live for another 5 or so years then do it, but if its slowly starting to fall apart then maybe look for another car.

there are some good 2nd hand cars out there, but it depends on what you are looking for.

thanks blokes for your replies, appreciate your advice/comments ... lunchey ... after discussion with my old mechanic have decided to put the money in and hopefully nurse another couple of years out it. (fingers crossed)

buying a small new car yes ur going to lose value in the first 2 years but do u plan selling it in the first two years???

I've had a tendency to buy German cars second-hand so someone else has had the big drop. For example, I bought my current 12 year old Audi when it was 6 years old with 80,000 Km on the clock. It cost about 40% of new price and has never given much trouble. It needs a service about once a year - the recent service cost $412.00 at 140,000 Km.

With an non-German car I'd probably buy at 2 or 3 years rather than 6.... The two Japanese cars I owned [both Nissan] gave more trouble, and the two Italian ones were shockers!

At the moment my body is giving me the shits my knees and back with the arthritis .Work funny when i come back from leave i always end up doing the job with all the lifting(the reason I took extended leave) which i am trained to do of course shits me that a 45 yo has to do it while the young ones get the good jobs .

Know how you feel Mickyj. I've got a touch of arthritis, mostly in my shoulder, but sometimes get it in other joints. You just can't get comfortable can ya

thnks D it was my old mechanic who now lives in Port Lincoln who gave me that advice (about spending the dosh to repair) - not my new mechanic .. he wasn't too keen to give me any advice he said it was up to us..

You've got that right johntheclaret .Norwood oval seats in the garndstand didnt do the arthritis in the back any good.
Feeling slightly better tonight took panadol at lunch made the afternoon a a bit better .

Kitchen renovations!

All fine on paper - the plumber would provide drainage for the dishwasher at "rough-in", and the sink could go in after the stone bench tops, so we didn't need to pay extra for a temporary connection. Then the plumber said the island in which the dishwasher was going could vary in position so he would come back and do it after it was positioned. [I learned later he meant when he put the sink in in 2 weeks when the stone bench top was in place.] The electrical work called for a neat 35mm high double power point on the frame of the trim on the end of the island. I caught the electrician about to put an ordinary and bulky box on the decorative panel in the middle. He said that's what his boss told him to do. I rang the kitchen comany who told him to put in what was contracted for. He said he had never seen one and would check and ring me next day. When he didn't, I found an electrical wholesaler, who stocked several varieties, and arranged with the kitchen firm that my wife and I would go and get one.

That done, I rang the kitchen firm and asked when the plumber was going to hook up the dishwasher and found out what his "later" had meant. At that point I got a little cross, and the manager of the kitchen firm offered a free temporary hook-up as a compensating gesture.

Then we discovered our supplier had sent me a damaged sink - "no big problem we'll send another and pick up the old one". The replacement arrived several days later - today - no tap hole. I rang the manager of the company we bought the sink from. He confirmed the tap hole was specified on the second order to his warehouse. "As we are now out of stock they'll ring you straight away and send a courier to pick it up, cut the tap hole, and courier it back this afternoon."

After 5pm - no courier, no phone call, hook-up on hold until they do it. All the kitchen contents are stacked in the hallway and Friday is Anzac Day so it is a short week.

Grrr - shambles.

2. why dont butchers give detailed receipts? About the only shop going around that dont do it, you are relying on the person who serves you to not rip you off.

Micky, have you tried a physiotherapist. they can give you a series of excercises that should help.
I got a bowt in my shoulder when I came down there last year. Maybee travelling didn't help, but I got a tube of Dencorub. Don't know if you've tried it or not, but it did seem to help. Meeting up with the Rooster fans and the GF day probably helped to take my mind off it too, but it did seem to work.
No horrible smell neither.
