Given the economy of most cars on the road now days, 17l/100km seems a lot.

Can't you pick them up, dust them off and eat them?

Generally, I think, continuing to run an older car with higher fuel consumption saves more than the cost of upgrading cars, quite apart from the electronic fragility issue. However, there comes a time when you have to bite the bullet.Alaska wrote:I was wrong it was 19km per 100 on this trip but no problems apart from carrying extra Jerries. I should be able to improve on this.Footy Chick wrote:This might be a stupid question - but why would you choose to drive that distance in a car that guzzles that much?

Ahhh..... good question my truck is 15 years old but has only done 100,000k bought as a used Toorak Tractor for small change, I have spent an extra $10k to do it up so it will go any ware! The other modern vehicles I travelled with did 11km per 100 but cost their owners over $ 50k.
I prefer to spend my money as I go.
I plan to go 10k per year on my trips for the next 5 years then look at my options. I still think I am in front and my truck has a lot less electronics that were causing trouble in the out of the way places. ( A tow from Mitchell Falls for a 200 Series Cruiser that had had its electronics shaken to bits cost $5k)
