BP Service Station in Surrey Downs (behind where the Golden Grove Tavern is at the Surrey Downs Shops)

This is in 1981

This is only 2 minutes from where I grew up - distinctly remember going there and begging to be able to buy a smurf.

Great pix. Despite being only 8 at the time I can remember parts of 1981 well, and quite fondly. Definitely a much simpler time.

I like the following:

    The guy in the second photo, second from left - great tie (width and pattern). They don't make 'em like that nowadays;

    The lady in the first pic who looks like she won the 1981 Miss BP Pageant;

    The old BP logo;

    The fact that the two smurfs are taller than some of the people;

    The use of Dixieland Jazz to ring in the opening of a new servo. I hope it was BP's own traveling minstrels in the first pic.

Here's a couple of pics of it in its former glory...

I'm pretty certain that is where Mark Twain stayed when he visited
Adelaide. It's hard to believe that someone of his pre-eminence would come to Adelaide in those times - especially given the travel required to do so.

Do you know why and when Twain visited Adelaide, DW?

All I know is he visited Australia and did a lecture tour and then wrote a book about his travels.
I feel like I should look that book up now.
