Now talk of armed guards in each school? What happens if he/she gets shot first?

Obama cant stand for another election, and yet any decision he makes about toughening up gun laws will have repercussions on his party, the time has come I believe to do something, and do it now!

I think the NRA wouldn't take it just politically. They'd view it as a personal attack on every citizen's rights (so the rhetoric goes), and how far would these gun toting, might is right zealots go to protecting (or revenging) their right to bear arms?
That's a question Obama must surely ask himself.

The problem is primarily NOT about guns, it is about their CULTURE surrounding guns and there is a very big difference between the two.

I can't believe i am supporting this argument, but gun control is NOT the answer; at least initially. If you take away the guns, but leave the culture in tact I don't think you will make a dent in the problem.

You have to stop the nutta choosing this course of action for their crazy outburst in the first place. Unfortunately, American's act out violently with guns (in comparison to other countries). In Australia the same person would have not acted out in this way, not because he couldn't get his hands on a gun, but because we do not share the same gun culture.

Comparing gun/shooting statistics between America and other countries IMO does not demonstrate much because it does not consider the broader cultural factors.

First you must change the culture, then address the gun laws. Of course this does not suggest the two approaches are mutually exclusive, but I think the issue must be approached in that order.

Even after a ban they would still not be (comparatively) hard to get in the US when you consider how many there are in circulation.

However, on the face of it, that would seem a reasonable initial gun control measure.

The likelihood of America changing their gun culture using their own free will is slim. This is why stricter gun laws need to happen.

You know what? this is exactly what the yanks are trying to do in the middle east, trying to change a society which for hundreds, if not thousands of years, has believed in degrading, beheading & raping women for what we consider to be ridiculously minor & trivial things. We want the yanks to change their gun laws, we think it's that simple but their society has had these bloody things ingrained for so long, they treat weapons as a simple thing such as owning a pet. Change will take a long time.

Change the second amendment to something along the lines of "Every U.S citizen has the right to live peacefully without the threat of other citizens bearing arms."
Or just get rid of the second amendment altogether and make whatever the third amendment is the second amendment.
Either action will go a long long way to changing their gun culture for the better.

if there was a decreased likelihood then yes. But how do we know that we ain't going to have 50 mass murders next year in Australia. The only way to really try and put a dent in it is by banning guns all together. then you just have to worry about the many illegal guns out there. It feels like you see it once a week on the news you see someone busted with illegal guns.
