FFS...
Because it's the fault of the teachers that the Federal Government have chosen to implement the National Curriculum, which requires another four days of training & development during 2012.

Those damn teachers, how dare they do what they're told.

Look I respect teachers and they do a great job in the main, I have this argument with my sister who is one, but I dont understand why they take another day away from the kids when they could come back from leave 1 day earlier?

Regulations state we have to have the pupil free days, and having one first day of term is least disruptive for the students, and most productive for teachers/schools. Again, regulations state that schools can't have something like a development day outside of school terms.

As a relief teacher I HATE school holidays, two weeks where I can't work and therefore can't get paid!

I suspect you'll find that the union 'negotiated' that requirements with the government.

It may seem to be less disruptive for students and teachers, but it's frigging annoying for working parents.

Schools are allocated 2 pupil-free days for staff T&D, and a school closure for local significance (eg, The Show), per year.

Schools in Australia have been allocated an extra 2 T&D pupil-free days for the next couple of years for a focus on the new National Curriculum.

well start the year 4 days earlier or 4 days later, when there aren't any students ... it shouldn't be that hard, surely?

Crazy regulation then, imagine a customer service business saying it needs a customer free day after having 2 weeks of them already!

You cant really blame teachers for doing what they're told.

What do you want them to do? Tell their students to come in when they arent supposed to, and no one will be there? If you had to do training for your job, do you have the option not to do it?

Its not the teachers fault, but maybe their union, and the education/government for accepting it.

also, do all the teachers have to do it on the same day? why not spread them over several, that way the school can still open, with teachers covering for the ones that arent there. when people at my workplace have training, we dont all do it together and shut the whole place down while it occurs.

i can understand remote schools doing it with all the staff on the one day, but surely in the metro area if two teachers from every school came to a central location you would have enough for a "training course" but not take enough away from any one school that would necessitate that they close. win, win
