Reckon I remember this- The Kent Town? Something like $7 entry then free beer from 8-12 or something...

fisho mcspaz wrote:The Tav at Flinders Uni - used to have a great turnout on Thursday nights before it all went to s**t with VSU. Loved the pints-for-schooners price days as well.

Back when I started there you could get a pint of Coopers Ale for something like 60 cents during happy hour. By third year the happy hour was like a weekly religious observance; everyone would grab a jug of ale (or three pints) when happy hour commenced. Every table in the joint would be covered in glassware full of liquid gold. The goal was to toss them back before the end of happy hour so you could buy a fourth pint on the cheap :)

I loved that place; the balcony with its panoramic view over the coast, the food (lasagne and chips with gravy was second to none), the graffiti in the dunnies, the people: the darts crowd, the drug dealers, the bloke who'd get smashed and then try to climb around the outside of the tavern, clinging to the windows...

For a while I got stuck running one of the clubs up at Flinders, and I used to occasionally tramp around the campus hanging up posters advertising the club. 3 or 4 years ago I stuck my head into the tavern while hanging posters in the union building and I was shocked. The mural in the foyer had been painted over, the toilets had been halved in size, the decor had been royally screwed over (gone was the faux thatched straw ceiling, gone was the exposed bricks, in its place was garish neon paint - blaah), a bloody admin building had been erected in front of the balcony, obliterating the view.... and the place was stone motherless EMPTY.

Frankly I think the whole Uni has gone downhill since the glory days. The VSU might be partly to blame, but for the most part this is a thin veil behind which certain people in the Uni admin try to hide their incompetence. If the union (or whatever replaced it) sacked the deadwood and replaced them with people who actually worked and worked well, the loss of union funds would not have had deep ramifications.

Used to spend most Saturday nights in Bogarts on Melbourne St.. FFS that was a dive. Met my second girlfriend there, took two years to shake her off.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

Loved the place!!! Had many great nights there. Stamp on the wrist on entry and then all the spirits, beers, wine & soft drinks you could drink. Every night it ended very messy!!! We used to do the walk to Pop! Nightclub in Gouger Street after....always tried to act straight as if I was too pi**ed I was worried I would never get in...never happened though :) Would stay at Pop! till the last song which was always that stupid Womble song from the kids T.V show....Big DJ Ian used to always spin it at the end of the night!!! Dare I request a song to him....always replied "No, we already played it!".....
Is out of change.....thanks Cambridge Clarrie!!!

Can ANYONE remember?

Has anyone answered this, we used to end up here after a night at Rush to wack a few balls around and slowly sip a couple of stiff drinks? The name is on the tip of my tongue... :?

Checked with a mate of mine, who's now tearing his hair out over it ... Eventually he came up with "Cleopatra's" (but he prefaced with a maybe).

Will check with my sister when I speak to her next as it should have been in her era.

I remember working at the Findon Hotel in the '90s and rememberhow big the Australian/American nights were.
The lengths some women will go to to "Pick up" an American Negro, (lets not start an all out racism war here) was astounding.
On the other hand, it was staggering what blokes will do to pick up the leftovers.
Myself & other bar staff used to LOAO.
Being young(er) the filthy offers i got would burn your ears
Also heard a great story about 1 Norwood captain (80's) and an incident at the Fiesta Villa, and why he was unavailable for a Prelim final.

Findon was my regular from about 95-2000 ... Missed the few Australian/American nights that took place, but my mates always had some funny stories from them.

In fact there's a good chance that some of those mates were among the blokes you're referring to lol

Being a regular you must have met big Allan Robinson, the Manager. He is surely the biggest a***h*** to own a pub in S.A. ;)

geez, some names of old haunts that bring back memories - ahh, the '70s & early '80s.

Fiesta Villa at the Findon. I think it was the Wed night venue. Started going there in high school & would be amazed by the number of girls from school a year or 2 younger than me also there. Would don the Bogart Jeans & press stud shirt, and try to impress! Old Lion - can't remember what night, but also on the circuit. Useful when one wanted to don the white shorts and "play away from home"! Bay Disco - ahh, the pyjama party nights! Bojangles at the Newmarket - full of West Torrens footballers, so a bit of competition, but never too much biffo went on.

Bands at the Arkaba, and some dodgy place in Hindley St (down a staircase into a 3rd world country). Often found myself at some late night (early am) dive in North Adelaide - will recall it's name as soon as I hit submit. Expensive beer + the the meal ticket. I'm certain some of those "suppers" must have lasted years. Largs was always good for a band and some flannelette! The 80's Sunday sessions with pubs opening for 2 hours at a time created a nice little circuit in the eastern suburbs.

Scary thing is FattyJnr is about the same age I was when my (mis)adventures began....................

LOL yup, used to know him very well such was the amount of time we spent in the place, knew pretty much all of the staff back then (which was always good for promo nights and when the lads behind the bar wanted Guinea Pigs for new shooters they'd concocted).

Think Al was kind enough to shout us a drink not long before the reno's commenced (after we'd been drinking there 3 nights a week for 5 years)

Correct! Very, very scary place.
Was coaching U/15's footy back in 1990 when i went to rumors one fateful night.
Lets just say that Sunday morning junior football is less complicated when you don't get dropped off by one of the players mothers. Difficuilt to explain to a hot headed 14 y.o.
