Back when I started there you could get a pint of Coopers Ale for something like 60 cents during happy hour. By third year the happy hour was like a weekly religious observance; everyone would grab a jug of ale (or three pints) when happy hour commenced. Every table in the joint would be covered in glassware full of liquid gold. The goal was to toss them back before the end of happy hour so you could buy a fourth pint on the cheap

I loved that place; the balcony with its panoramic view over the coast, the food (lasagne and chips with gravy was second to none), the graffiti in the dunnies, the people: the darts crowd, the drug dealers, the bloke who'd get smashed and then try to climb around the outside of the tavern, clinging to the windows...
For a while I got stuck running one of the clubs up at Flinders, and I used to occasionally tramp around the campus hanging up posters advertising the club. 3 or 4 years ago I stuck my head into the tavern while hanging posters in the union building and I was shocked. The mural in the foyer had been painted over, the toilets had been halved in size, the decor had been royally screwed over (gone was the faux thatched straw ceiling, gone was the exposed bricks, in its place was garish neon paint - blaah), a bloody admin building had been erected in front of the balcony, obliterating the view.... and the place was stone motherless EMPTY.
Frankly I think the whole Uni has gone downhill since the glory days. The VSU might be partly to blame, but for the most part this is a thin veil behind which certain people in the Uni admin try to hide their incompetence. If the union (or whatever replaced it) sacked the deadwood and replaced them with people who actually worked and worked well, the loss of union funds would not have had deep ramifications.
