Looks like some "point to point" speed cameras being introduced to some country roads soon:

That is for trucks and it measures time taken to ensure that the drivers take their mandated rest breaks. Cameras also on the Bridge at Port Augusta.....

How many truck drivers need a break between wakefield and two wells, it was more of a rhetorical question, the cameras installed there are also for light vehicles.

I thought they detected the time it took from point to point to ensure the speed limit wasn't broken.

they currently dont check light vehicles for speed, however they do have the ability to, its just not allowed by legislation as yet (it has certainly been suggested for light vehicles though). however those cameras will detect unregistered light vehicles, and an expiation will be sent out to those drivers.

those cameras were introduced to ensure trucks were not speeding/neglecting breaks, and work on point to point. they are all over the place. bridge road pooraka, port wakefield road globe derby, near the tollgate on the freeway. its not that a truck driver should rest between adelaide and port wakefield say, but if htey have driven through from say mount gambier they would. they can only drive for something like 13 hours out of every 24 (not sure on exact number of hours). anything that covers the distance too quick is flagged for further investigation.

back onto the original topic, did anyone else see that it has been suggested the NT should return some roads to an unlimited limit as since they introduced a 130k limit the road toll has actually increased? ill try to find the link

found the link: http://news.drive.com.au/drive/motor-ne ... 2j6zy.html

for once some common sense. evidence showing that reducing speed limits is not the magic cure for road deaths, so they are looking at returning unlimited sections. if only more of the knee jerk reactions that pollies make were looked at later and removed when it is shown that their "solutions" make no difference whatsoever, apart from making things harder for the people that were doing the right thing to begin with.

not sure though that getting rid of seat belts would help GG. if the lower speed limits have been shown to increase the road toll, they should be removed, i would have thought that most people would want a lower road toll. dont you? speed is not the only factor in road crash statistics. its just the easiest to police.

An the best cash return for outlay!
I welcome more realistic speeds on open roads outside built up areas, but I'd still wear my seat belt regardless of the legal requirement.

It all went according to plan, offered full SACA memberships immediately and full footy memberships. Going to get cricket memberships for at least one year to enjoy the Ashes, just booked 3 days off work for it.

Absolute insanity !
Roads have never been better and smoother, cars have never been safer and quieter.
So reducing speeds instead of increasing them will lead to far more deaths through drivers going to sleep.
Especially now that the crazy low speeds means it now takes twice as long to get anywhere.
Back in the days of NO speed restictrions you couldn't go to sleep wrestling with the old cars on sh!t roads
at 100 mph. That's 160 kph !!!
Time to bring in graded licences so those with years of safe high speed driving experience aren't insulted by
these totally insane and utterly unnecessary draconian restrictions.

You have my vote Sabre! ;)
I had a Bathurst Monaro back in the days of unlimited speed in SA outside built up areas, and both my current cars would cope far better.
Generally I think about 130-150 kph is comfortable on open roads, depending on conditions.
I do tend to find it harder to keep focussed at lower speeds on empty county highways.
