The perception that its solely younger people that have no manners, but I've really noticed in the last few years, that a generation that is becoming one of the rudest and poorest mannered of all, is that over around 55 or so.

A percentage of this age group push through people in shops without so much as an "excuse me", expect to be allowed to cut into supermarket queues and get quite nasty when declined (particularly if they have 10 items or so, and I have only 3 or 4 and they try the "I might just jump in before you" approach and start sidling in without waiting for an answer), cut into car park spots/road lanes without indicating (the number of this age group that simply won't indicate is startling), and sigh/make loud comments when having to wait behind younger people in shops etc.

Yet, they often complain about how rude young people are. I'm not sure if its a subconscious attitude of "I've been around for so long that now its my time to drop my manners", but its getting really noticeable and a number of people I know have commented on this in the last couple of years.

completely agree with this. its like they think us younger people "owe" them or something, but what have they done for us? except ruin the planet ;), the worst part is that the majority let them get away with it, who wants to be seen arguing with the little old lady in the supermarket? if everyone pulled them up on it they wouldt dare to do it again, but as it is the other way around, they can do what they like...

All of them fought in wars? Even if that is the case, that gives people a blanket excuse to be rude if they feel like it? Handy to remember :?

Of course not all of them fought wars - and No it doesn't give them the automatic right to be rude to younger people.

Call be a bit old fashioned - but I'm still a big advocate of respect your elders (unless they're driving at 40kph in a 70 zone and then they cop my wrath big time  )

i am not saying dont respect our elders, i do respoect them, but that does not extend to allowing them to be outright rude to me and my family. respect should go both ways, i fthey want to be rude to me, they can expect to be told that they are, in a nice way of course ;)

I'm absolutely the same with that. Will stand up for them in the situation arises (eg a seat etc), let them through if a situation arises where both are in the same space (a narrow aisle) and fully believe in respecting your elders, without question - BUT it cuts both ways too, and there is a percentage out there who simply don't do that to younger people, and carry an air of "I don't have to be polite, but if its not given to me, then I will rail up". When I cop a mouthful, for example, in the fruit and veg section for apparently taking too long to select mushrooms, when I've been there 30 seconds at most and the person gets gradually louder and ruder about it, then it goes a bit far.

Don't start me on people driving the wrong speed in the wrong lanes, FC :D

Show me some respect and I will respect you back. Don't respect me then don't expect it back. It takes 2 to tango......
