Colombian drug smuggler busted with $47,000 worth of cocaine hidden under oversized toupee

A Colombian drug smuggler is giving new meaning to the term "bad hair day" after he was caught hiding half a kilo of cocaine underneath an oversized toupee.

The man, whose identity has not been released by Spanish police, was detained last month at Barcelona's international airport after arriving on a flight from Bogota.

According to authorities, the 65-year-old attracted police attention as he looked nervous and had a disproportionately large hairpiece under his hat.

Upon further inspection, they found a package stuck to his head with about 30,000 euros ($47,000) worth of cocaine.

"There is no limit to the inventiveness of drug traffickers trying to mock controls," a statement by Spain's national police said.

The police department, which quipped the arrest would make the man's hair "fall out", released details about the bust for the first time on Tuesday.

In a tweet including two photos, the man is seen wearing the toupee in question, before it is removed to expose a grey package perched on top of his balding head.

Believe it or not, it may not be the strangest method of drug concealment authorities have come across.

While this smuggler was using his head, another opted for the other end.

Portuguese authorities apprehended a man trying to hide one kilogram of cocaine inside fake buttocks at Lisbon's international airport in 2018, according to the BBC.
