Just because you are not a "racist" person doesn't mean you are excused from anything you might say though.

I know some will feel you can't separate a comment from the person like that.

"People think it's a one-off in the Collingwood game," Brayshaw said.

"It's not a one-off incident, it happens way too often, it's virtually a weekly occurrence.

"Adam Goodes, what he was doing last Friday, was basically putting his hand up and saying it's enough."

Lyon said there was still "a degree of ignorance" about what constitutes racism when "even someone like Eddie ... found himself a little confused.

"(Eddie) said himself he didn't think it was vilification, the point is it's not what we think or the person saying it thinks, it's about what the other person thinks.

"That is what continues to confuse a lot of people.

"You still hear people say this is an overreaction, it's not in any shape or form. It's not about us, it's about the person being vilified."

For someone who works in Mental Health I can not believe it is still going when we are trying so hard for people to understand and accept Mental Illness as a sickness.

What I was trying to say is everyone is up in arms over the racism issue ATM but Sam can go around thinking he is HIGH and MIGHTY and make a mockery of people living with a Mental Illness. It gets seen on the Footy show and takes away all the hard work people in organisations are trying to do to educate people on it.

The audience laughs and people at home - I just feel it is a massive step back.

A very good point.

Our casual, no-malice-intended, attitude toward slurs is not 'evil'. It's not morally corrupt. It's not shameful.

It's just deeply inconsiderate. We may not care about these 'slips of the tongue' but somebody will, simply because real prejudice still exists. And while a minority still has a long way to go before reaching some semblance of equality, that casual 'rudeness' will always mean much more than that.

Okay no worries and agree 100% with that. I was genuinely shocked at the maturity of the discussion by Lyon & Bradshaw last night. I tuned in for the first time in years purely because I thought Eddie being the former host & close friend of Sam they would all be lining up to defend him and trying their hardest to talk the situation down. I watched The Footy Show a bit back when Eddie was the host but lost interest due to the shamefulness of Street Talk & Eddie commentating on Collingwood games back when Channel 9 had the rights.

So in essence, if I am having a private conversation and something is overheard by a person of another racial background and that comment offends them it is a racist comment? Regardless of the context of that comment or intent?

In addition to this if I choose not to speak to people of another race, for fear of offending them with a racist comment (intentional or otherwise), I am being racist. So the act of trying to avoid being racist ends up meaning I am racist.

I realise how absurd this is but that pretty much sums up how absurd this all seems. Words only have power if you let them, people who are racist enjoy getting a rise out of their victims.

At the end of the day if someone tries to offend you regardless of the context or content of the effort are they really worth the effort? Thank them for pointing out they are out and out **** and move on.
