I believe it is because, to the "small country folk" like myself, it is a massive step up, in terms of partying/shopping/entertainment...
I went to a club in Adelaide a few weekends ago, got an ID check (no biggie), photo taken for security (a tad over the top), then my fingerprint done (well "Hello Jebus!")... That happens in a small town, you call the staff a bunch of tossers, and you go elsewhere.
In RADelaide, totally worth it...
So much access to shops and such there, it is a huge step up... Old hat of course, for living Adelaideians...
