Tram Line Extension

Postby Punk Rooster » Sun Dec 11, 2005 7:48 pm

What's the general feeling with regards to this extension, which looks to be going ahead regardless? I for one am in favour of it. They should never have gotten rid of the trams in the firstplace. I think the extension should run through to North Adelaide (actually, all the way to Prospect Oval  ). As you wil note, this poll has been worded fairly :D

ROFL

having spent a lot of time in Melbourne, I think trams are the best invention ever

maybe there are other things the money could be spent on, but there always is and always will be, and you're never going to please everyone...

I disagree, a complete waste of money.
The cost to send it merely down a road where public transport already exists is quite extraordinary and I honestly can't believe any sane person would condone this idea.
Add to that the congestions its going to add to our main rd and I'd be laughing my tits off if I didn't realise it may become a reality.

I think it's more ridiculous, that to get to the tram line (from the train station), you need to catch a bus. Of even less logic, is having the Interstate Rail at Keswick. I/S Rail's home needs to be in the City. Linking the Tram to this is an overdue initiative, not that they should of removed it in the first place. SA may be in the Dark Ages, but istory dictates we take 1 step fwd, 3 steps back.

I agree something needs to be done about the I/S rail terminal that's an absolute disgrace.
As for the tramway, if you miss the Beeline you could always god forbid go for a 5 minute walk!!!
I still can't believe the proposed cost to replace a 5 min walk or a 1 min bus trip, its beyond my comprehension how anyone could justify it.

The tramway is mainly a tourist attraction, there would be dozens of bus routes that get more commuters daily.

I believe the idea of this also, is to remove the buses from King William, thus freeing up the flow of traffic. This will also be helped by the fact that there will be no right turns. Makes sense tho, linking the 2 biggest shopping precincts/tourist atractions by tram. As for the 5 minute walk, it is not the most savoury area to be in come night fall. Tourists have been harassed & coerced into making donations. This cam happen anywhere, but at least the Police presence is greater near the Mall/Train Station.

Crikey Punky, your posts get shakier as they go on. How the hell is a tram going down a 5 minute walk going to remove the 40 odd bus routes that go down King William Street presently and where are you going to put them??

By the way, check the poll results

this is costing 21 million bucks?!?!?! surely they can't economially justify that much money for a tramline extension of little more than 1km.....

they need to spend some money on solutions for the main arterial roads which are becoming choked up, main north rd, south rd, north east rd.

in the words of napolean dynamite.... "idiots!"

Strewth, after reading the above and some comments about the tunnel, it seems that Adelaide's public transport system is falling to pieces. I want to throw my hat in the ring but I don't know enough about it all. If this tram is going the whole way to North Terrace, then where will it terminate? Right now it has all that room in Vic Square to just sit around in. I assume that it will either take a right onto North Terrace and pull over to the gardens as it awaits the time to again depart, or it will continue straight down King William to where the median strip gets a little wider (from memory).
I'm gonna sit back, crack the top off a Pale Ale, and watch the Double Blues prevail

Cons: Waste of taxpayers money which could be spent on South Road,Port Rd,Henley Beach Roads.
: Waiting however many years for a tram line about 800metres long to be built, and the disruption caused to
the already hellish city traffic.
: Hindley st / Rundle mall getting more traffic on it.
: Who knows how many buses going elsewhere in the city, mind you, where?
: The loss of the middle of King William st nature strip, looks great when filled with flags of the current day events.
: How long before an unsuspecting Joe Public gets killed.

Pros : Ugly women who walk along Grand Juction rd Athol Park.
If you want to go quickly, go alone.

If you want to go far, go together.

Read the Sunday Mail. They've already committed funds to fix up roads. This is not a case of "we've got a spare 21 mill, roads or trams? Trams!" Whoever dismantled our tram system originally, has ****** up.

Total waste of money. A desparate attempt by a government that has achieved nothing in four years to create something tangible.

I want the tram to run right through to North Adelaide...there's so many good restaurants and pubs up there that I'd much rather be frequenting than some of the shite CBD ones...

Two wrongs don't make a right. They got rid of the horse and cart and the steam locomotive too but I can't justify 21 mil to bring either of those back.

While we're at it why don't we spend 50 million to un-bituminise king william road because dirt has a nostalgic appeal.

Look to Melbourne... the've always had trams, and have continually extended & upgraded them. Cost a damn site more than 21 mill, and they've got a lot more traffic than us, and they seem to cope! Yes bring back the dirt roads, gas light, 5 o'clock closing.... not sure where your heading with the nostalgia thing, it seems li8ke your post has gone "off track"
