Looking to buy a Jack Russell purebreed or cross pup. Anybody have any creditable contacts to breeders they could recommend? Any tips would be appreciated.

Tip 1 - Breeders are over rated and you'll find the blood line is inbred leading to health issues.

Go to the RSPCA or just look in the paper, you don't need a piece of paper to tell you you have a 'Jack Russel'

Smashing little dogs. My best mate has had one for years.

I'd suggest the first thing to remember is that the full name is Jack Russell Terrier. Not being pedantic but that word is probably key...they are terriers and they will chase and hunt and happily take on anything from a rat to a Great Dane given the chance so I'd recommend you sign up for puppy training as soon as possible. Also get pet insurance because they are very, very lively dogs and given the chance will try and bolt down any burrow/hole they think might house potential prey so scrapes and knocks are pretty inevitable as are the vet fees.

That said they are wonderful little dogs and great fun and full of character. Oh yeh and get some good walking shoes/boots...unless you train it to use a treadmill you're going to be doing a fair bit of walking

I've met a lot of alleged "Wolfhounds" that were nothing like the real thing.

While there are some shonky breeders who do things like inbreeding they usually get run out of the canine associations and finish up selling to pet shops.
Real breeders care about their breed, and their dogs. It is a hobby to them and they don't expect to make money
There is no big money to be made from ethical breeding - you are lucky if you break even.

There are two varieties of "Jack Russell" one, an offshoot of the other, being distinguished by the title "Parson Jack Russell".
"American Cocker Spaniels" and "Cocker Spaniels" are much more distinctly different from each other to look at.

My big one gets hungry watching you eat and drools excessively then a bubble forms on the side of his mouth which expands and deflates with each breath.
Personally I love that
I have a line of snot/gunk around my house on the wall at knee level from the constant sneezing and spit that comes out while breathing.

There would be more cases of people needing medical treatment from jack russells and other terrier breeds than from boxers... I'd much rather my kids play with a boxer than a terrier any day if the week. The boxers temperament is so good they are used as guide dogs in some countries.

For the drooling problem, its usually only when food is around and they want it. Having an old tea towel around takes care of that.

Sorry WLF, just my personal opinion, didn't mean to hate on those who like those breeds. Just never could come at them myself that's all.

I live by the following 'dog theory':

I will only ever own a dog that's small enough to drop punt over the back fence if something snaps in it's head and decides to get vicious and go me.

Their farts must be rank if they are only eating meat.

Lets face it ALL dogs are capable of biting someone whether it's a chihuahua or a pitbull. I grew up around Irish terriers, German short-haired pointers and miniature poodles and never once got bitten by any of them. All anyone can do is get one from a reputable source, train the dog, train the kids and train themselves and remember it's a dog not a human.

One of the hardest dogs to obedience train, they and Pugs will do their own thing, if you are lucky and they are in the mood they will do what you want occasionally as well....................still love them to death though

Boxers are very dumb and take a hell of a lot longer to settle down than other dogs.
I'd have more luck training a fence post.
I do love them though and they're great fun.
Luckily mine is cross with a spaniel so is only a spaniel height. Full size ones can be a handful!
