I'd think 7 years is about what you'd expect for manslaughter. The man was undeniably incompetent and negligent but he's no Harold Shipman.

Not sure where the 'out in 3' bit comes from but I doubt there's any guarantee that he would get an early release.

Should probably be thankful the judge didn't go with the defence teams request of a suspended sentence.

Yep I believe there's a big difference...and I doubt you could ever prove an intent to kill in his case. Just cos I thought the sentence is what you'd expect to hear these days doesn't mean I agree with it though. I'm one of those people who wants drunk drivers who kill to get life. I certainly think he should have got a longer sentence.

I can't believe his legal team are now appealling the harshness of the setence, hopefully it backfires and he gets alot longer

For someone of his age and background, 7 years is a pretty harsh sentence, but I can understand the relatives of the victims would think it inadequate.

Presumably they would only be doing that because he's directed them to. He probably doesn't have a lot to lose in the sense that he's relatively old for the prison system and may not make it til the end of his sentence.

In saying that, I do agree the sentence is inadequate given the circumstances of his offences.

It's a pity none of the bureaucrats, who didn't check his credentials, or who ignored concerns about his competence among staff because he was ripping through the waiting list and making their statistics look good, had to face charges.

Not to mention the money he was bringing into the Hospital based on the funding allocation for his procedures. Increase the volume of cases increase the funding....

Wouldn't mind betting there is a paper/poster floating around somewhere from the early 2000s demonstrating how Regional Hospitals can cut waiting lists...

His sentence can be attributed to the fact that this just wasn't his fault it was a fault of the system and culture he worked in. Who checked his credentials and allowed him to do what he did???
