Canberra crash death mother blames police
ROBYN GRACE
March 22, 2010 - 11:44AM

The mother of a girl who was a passenger in a stolen vehicle that ran a red light and killed a young family in Canberra on Saturday night has blamed police for causing the accident after a high-speed pursuit.

The chase was called off only moments before the stolen car ran a red light and slammed into another vehicle.

Scott Oppelaar, a 33-year-old father of six, Samantha Ford, 29, and their son, Brodie, were killed instantly in the smash.

The driver of the stolen vehicle, Justin Williams, 23, also died.

It was the second time in 10 months he had been in a stolen car crash.

His 18-year-old female passenger, Skye Webb, is still in a coma in Canberra Hospital.

Ms Webb's mother Debbie this morning conceded Justin was running from police but said she blamed police "totally" for the crash.

"I can see he's done wrong but (stealing a car is) a petty little crime," she told Radio 3AW.

"One stolen car. He didn't murder anybody at the time, you know, but that's what it led him to because of the police chase."

The mother called for legislation to ban police pursuits.

"Innocent people are dying all because of police chases," she said.

"People have really got to get the message out, police have got to stop this.

"Obviously you run from the police because you don't want to get caught."

Police were conducting standard traffic duties in Queanbeyan about 10pm on Saturday night when they allege the stolen Mazda 626 sped past them.

When Mr Williams did not stop as requested, police gave chase, crossing the ACT border along Canberra Avenue.

It is believed Mr Williams was a disqualified driver with a criminal record.

The stolen car allegedly sped through a red light just before the intersection with the Monaro Highway exit ramp at Narrabundah, when police ended the chase.

Seconds later, the car went through a second red light, hitting the family's Mazda3.

Ms Webb said the police officers should have radioed their ACT counterpart to set up a road block instead of engaging in a pursuit.

"They're to blame, they're to blame totally, I blame the police totally," she said.

"Yes, Justin may have a little bit to do with it but ... you know."

Its quite laughable really that the police are blamed.

All the idiot who hit the car had to do was stop the chase and face up to what was coming to him, and no one would have been hurt.

Is always the same everytime it happens, no simple answer I'm afraid, it's the innocent victims families and friends along with the Police i feel sorry for, having been there and done that it is not a nice thing to live with. And quite simple re the female in the car, she would have known it was stolen so also why get in it in the first place.

People always call for pursuits to be terminated, SAPOL has a tough policy on them but quite simple, you ban pursuits sit back and watch Crime figures go through the roof

I think it's pretty ludicrous that this woman wants to put all the blame on the police. So despite the fact that this bloke stole a car - not for the first time - he incurs no responsibility? Why did the police attempt to pull him over in the first place, it wasn't because he was SPEEDING by any chance?

I was thinking that if all police cars were fitted out with a camera that could capture the licence plate image, there wouldn't be any need for pursuit - but I suppose that wouldn't help much if the car was stolen.

Give her a break, her daughter is dead. I reckon it's wrong that she is blaming the cops but now is probably not the time for her to say 'well maybe she did the wrong thing'. That will only come with time.

The Police can and do call off a chase if they think it is becoming too dangerous and the end result suggests they should have done so in this instance. Still, if the car didn't get pinched none of this wouldn't have happened as has been mentioned above.

No winners here.

I saw the sister's of the girl interviewed yesterday and they were going off at the police about it. Their words were "it wasn't his fault. He is a great bloke, even though he was a criminal. It's the fault of the police". What a load of crap.
So you've seen everything have you?

The comments about the Police are disgraceful, but what would you expect, these high achievers to take any personal responsibility for their actions??
The Police are just faceless punching bags for these people, saves them looking too close to home.

Absolute disgrace, the mother should be looking at the way she brought up her son instead of trying to blame the Police, also reading through the comments on the news.com.au website alot of people are trying to pin the blame on the courts and the justice system which is laughable in this case as the driver 10 month ago had been in a coma when he crashed another stolen car, so how can you blame the justice system if a person didnt learn from almost dying?

Yep certainly not the sharpest tool in the shed.

Also, if the pursuit was terminated prior to the crash then how is it the police's fault?
