Portable airconditioners??

Postby GWW » Mon Jan 04, 2010 1:40 pm

Has anyone got any advice on a good type/brand of portable airconditioner?

I got a quote on a fixed/installed air con, price over $5,000. So now looking at a cheaper type of portable air con. I've checked out a few portable ones ("Convair" brand) on the net but these ones require a door/window to be open, but this is not really practical for me.

Any advice/info would be much appreciated.

Are you talking about air-cons or water coolers?

Umm, either really. I don't know a lot about them to tell you the truth. If its portable, does that then mean its a water cooler? I would prefer not to have to pour water in it every few hours if possible.

If it was $500 it was a water cooler.

About as useful as tits on a bull.

You can get portable refridgerated air-cons - you might want to look up delonghi.

Ok ok, thanks FC, i hadn't heard of that brand before. Do you know if any retailers in Adelaide sell delonghi? I presume you don't need a door/window open for refrigerated air cons?

I know David Jones do - you might want to try Radio Rentals, The Good Guys or if desperate, Harvey Norman though.

De Longhi, made in Italy - look for the penguins on the packaging 8)

I did have a look at Harvey Norman previously, they're advertising something called an "Air Multiplier", anyone know much about these? Someone mentioned to me that they're a new type of technology..

Basically, a new type of more efficient fan, not an air conditioner, and very expensive because they are new technology.
They should drop in price dramatically when they become more common.

fc. for $500 youll pick up a portable air-con, not a water cooler, the water coolers are around $200 and are useless, the aircons start from about 400 and are bloody awesome, highly recomend you spend the extra money and get a $600-$700 one as they have increased HP

Yeah but are the $500 deals evaporative (leave a window open) or refridgerated?

Mighty good price if it is refridgerated..

all portable aircons have a hose that goes out the window, or through a hole to the outside, just like any airconditioner has an outside part of the unit, the hot air has to go somewhere afterall!

that one was just a demonstation, go down the the good guys and you will pick up a refridgerated air con for about 500-600

Innovations - I'd forgotten they existed. I'll have a browse on the web site.
They lost me when I moved from Mt Dandenong, Vic. to Wayville, SA, then back to Olinda, Vic., in 2003-4 [for family reasons].
I've still got the Titanium watch I bought from them for $40 in 2002, and its still working... 8)

Thanks for that link scottroo. I am a bit reluctant to go for something that requires a window to be opened however, as my windows are a bit of a problem.

I might consider one of those air multipliers, i may have to go into HN to see how effective they are (whether or not they are more effective than a conventional fan).
