Local Councils - Good or Bad?

I am totally p*ssed with my council, they do SFA except collect a bin once a week, a green waste bin bin monthly and if you want a second green bin it costs you an extra $50.00 a year.

They have stopped the streetsweeper and the gutters are full of leaves, bark and all the other crap that people are too lazy to put in the bins. You ring them, they say we haven't got enough man power, I say,employ some, they say, your rates will go up, I say get stuffed and leave the sh*t where it is. Incidentally, it's catch cry is "naturally better" so I guess that refers to leaving all the sh*t all over the entire council zone. And the stand in CEO is on $250K to sit in a swivel chair. how about that!

My area (in Marion Council) hasnt had streets swept for ages either. I think its time for them all 2 go!!

They will try and bend you over on anything
They wanted to take me to court over a parking fine in TTP
I was guilty but refused to pay it cos the inspector put the wrong date on the ticket and I could prove I was not there on that date
12 months later they let me off with a 'warning' not to do it again!

They are a nightmare to deal with for the footy club too

Just received an email back ffrm Marion Council re:gutters. Every 6 weeks- sure used to be weekly , fornightly at most!!

Thank you for contacting the City of Marion in relation to debris in the
gutters on Diagonal Road Warradale.

Our street sweepers operate via a programme that ensures all of the
Suburbs in the City of Marion have their streets swept approximately every
six weeks. Unfortunately this time of year we have trees shedding
excessive amounts of bark and leaves resulting in large amounts of debris
ending up in the watertable. We have a contracted another street sweeper
to assist us with this issue and will be operating in our council area
beginning the 9th February 2009.

I have spoken with the Field Supervisor in charge of the street sweepers
and he has assured me that the sweepers are due to return to Warradale via
the programme and sweep the entire suburb.

If you have any further concerns in relation to this matter please feel
free to contact me on the details provided below.

TTG Council?

I'm in TTG and have good and bad to say about them.

Firstly, getting council approval for building construction is shocking. Builders apparently say that TTG is the worst of all as far as time/turnaround is concerned. My builder actually started without approval on the basis he knew it'd take ages. Approval came through about 3 weeks after they started. Despite the delay, they normally come thru with an OK.

The good is that they do a hard refuse pickup upon request. I've got rid of tonnes of stuff for free. You do have to wait for a month or so when you phone up, but their service is great and they normally take everything.

on the topic of councils, how do you start a bid of no confidence in your councils? Just interested in knowing. Not happy that us ratepayers are paying interest on land (Domain) that has been vacant for many years.( site of new pool).

Local councils are fine so long as they are local.
My experience of living in the Walkerville Council area after my then residential area of Vale Park was transferred to it from the much larger Enfield Council was very positive.
Rates went down, footpaths got fixed and it was easy to talk to both councillors and council staff about issues.
Local government works if the local council areas are small enough that the residents and councillors get to know each other and thus the decision makers cannot hide behind being faceless men [or women].

The idea of consolidating into fewer larger councils for economic reasons is I suspect a furphy, and the real point is that it is easier for state governments to make back room deals with a smaller number of large councils.

Smaller local councils are also forced to be more responsive to ratepayers who can more easily run a campaign to replace shonky representatives.
I was active in the group arranging the ceding of Vale Park from Enfield to Walkerville, and later when I lived at Klemzig in replacing an Alderman who pushed through some last minute re-zoning so his company got the electrical contracts for the blocks of flats in the middle of an R1 area.

Get a group of residents together. Go doorknocking and drum up support or find out whether there is any support. Persuade people to write individual letters to the councillors in the local ward.
100 individual letters have more impact the 150 signatures on ONE petition at all levels of goverment.

If it does not get fixed by doing that, next election day encourage all the neighbours to vote on the issue, using another door-knocking campaign.
