I think a "ness" is just a rock or stoney outcrop jutting into water.
If so, all "Loch Ness" promises is a lake and a rock... [And Nessie could be renamed Rocky or Rocki depending on gender.. ;) ]
EPIGENETICS - Lamarck was right!

Having recently returned from livingin the UK for a couple of years, here's my 2p :

1. Premier League game. Nothing beats the atmosphere. But go to a game involving a bigger club. ie - if you go and see balckburn v porstmouth, it'll be rubbish unless you're a fan of either side. Go to a game involving Man U, Liverpool, Tottenham, West Ham or Aston Villa, as these clubs have fanatical fans who generally sing and carry on all game.

2. Borough Markets - on the south bank, this was one of my favourite things to do in London. Beautiful food and a great atmosphere.

3. Do a Jack the Ripper walking tour. They'll take you to the sites of all 5 murders and also explain most of the history and myths regarding the murders. Absolutely fascinating.

4. Tower Bridge - great tour and excellent views of the city from up there. You can incorporate a Tower of London tour in here too as they're side by side.

5. Hadrians Wall - walk along the remaining sections of the Roman wall, which was built to keep out the ferals Scott's (sorry JAS ;) - p.s. (my family heritage is 50% Scottish :) ). The best part is near Hexham, with a spot called 'Sycamore Gap' being the highlight.

6. Lake District - all of it. Absolutely spectacular

7. Edinburgh Castle - best castle in the UK IMO. (And I've seen HEAPS of them) Edinburgh in general is well worth a few days too, especially around August when the fringe is on.

8. Stratford Upon Avon - Shakespear's birthplace, but it's more than that. It's a beautiful town and the home of tudor housing with thatched roofing.

9. PUBS!!! - Definitely step into as many pubs as you can and try the ales and food. But make sure you do not miss the Cheshire Cheese, which is down a little alley off the Strand in London. It's the most fascinating pub I've ever been in. It was burned down in the great fire in 1666 and rebuilt the year after. Since then it has not been touched and is completely original. They still burn coal in the fireplace to retain the old world feeling. Some other crackers are the Churchill Arms on Kinsington church St - some of the best decor on the walls you'll ever see, the Prince Bonaparte - very classy and a celeb hangout, and any of the pubs on the Thames waterfront at Richmond - great way to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon.

10. Like others have said, the Lords tour is fab.

Brilliant mate, love it. Those pubs in London sound awesome, will definitely check them out!

Yep I remember our 'it's a small world' chat Christmas before last :D

However, will you lot listen...for probably not the last time...location does not equal nationality ~x( You can say what you like about Scotland and the Scottish...I'm not Scottish, never have been and never will be. In fact if I ever win a lotto jackpot the first thing that will change will be my location ;)

Anyway back to Hadrian...haven't visited myself but I would probably suggest the Roman Fort at Vindalonda to any history buffs...you can even have a go at archeology with them...

My favourite memories of my weeks in the UK include -
England:
-Div 1, 2008 final at Wembley Stadium with 78,000 people.
-Liverpool (especially being a big Beatles fan).
-Tour of Lord's Cricket Ground and museum, and then round the corner to walk the Abbey Road crossing.
-Bath.
-Imperial War Museum.
-Seeing A Midsummer Night's Dream at the Globe Theatre, and other productions such as Les Miserables and The Phantom Of The Opera.
-Greenwich.
-The village-style towns.
-Wondering around London's busy streets checking out Big Ben, Piccadilly Circus, etc.

Scotland
-Stirling and the nearby Doune Castle from Monty Python's Holy Grail.
-The Scottish Highlands and Glen Coe.
-Stonehenge.
-The quiet/small towns.

Ireland
-The southern coast of Ireland, especially the cliffs, the very narrow streets and the mountains covered with rock walls.
-Giant's Causeway.
-Derry.

Best of all with all these places are the small, warm, cosy pubs. No crappy taverns with TAB and pokies, just really comfortable places with a friendly atmosphere, great food and super beers on tap!

Ah, yes, sorry! Just didn't want to offend in case you'd become fond of the locals - obviously not

I can definitely vouch for Vindolanda. It's absolutely fascinating and well worth a visit. It's actually very close to Sycamore Gap, which can be reached with a moderately strenuous 2 hour walk. there are also a number of other ancient mile castles along the way. It's just a beautiful part of the world.
