Test Match - Better Batsman?

Postby JK » Mon Jan 18, 2010 1:05 pm

Have been having conversation of late with mates, over the old Test Match game, which Im sure most on here either had or have, or have at least played the game.

Lately we've been arguing over which was the better batsman .. The dude with the string pull* bat, or the newer model with the plastic lever?

So I thought I would throw it out there to the SAFooty public.

I'm undecided but perhaps tend to lean toward the newer style.

I can only remember the old 70's/80's version, so can't really vote myself :)

Haven't seen the new version.

Having had the game for decades and had the pleasure of playing with both, I am of the opinion that the
new version was better as you could get more power from the shot. the downside was that it was much easier to break the batsman when really following through with the shot.

The plastic version with the small thumb indentation is the one, the older version. As with all things nowadays they are made to break.

The real question is, what has happened to the ball?

* I recently purchased the new version for Junior Boon and the ball is red and about 3 times the size of the silver ball bearing I spent many of my summers playing with* *

Really? used to love the fact that if you lost the ball a quick trip to the shed to fetch a ball bearing and away you went.

Yep and the new ball is softer, well, not 'soft' but is made of some composite material and not just good old fashioned ice cold steel.

Bah humbug! Kids today they dont know what they are missing out on!
Does that mean that the bowling chute is wider too?
What about the fielders catching areas?

If not,I'd "lose" that ball pretty quick Booney so Boon jr can enjoy the REAL game!

I had to walk 4kms in 60 degree heat in bare feet to play Test Match with my mates. Kids these days can probably sit on their ar$e in their loungeroom and play on the Google with the Twitbook.

I've just discovered that the file photo above is newer than mine.
The one I've got is an original 1960's version with real brass handles and 8 ball overs !
Now I REALLY feel old...... :(

We used to put blu-tac behind the fielders feet so they didn't fall over when you hit it hard to them, anyone with a scoreboard was considered a millionaire.
