Today was one of the longest days of my life, and getting home from work i was greeted by the usual excitement she has shown for the last 10 years - mainly because she knows its dinner time, but im hoping it was because she actually liked me too. Very heart-breaking to take her for that final drive to vet, as she loves the car ride ( i thought about turning the car around at least 3 times). Even harder taking her out of the car and into the vet. The Vet and nurse were fantastic, explained everything to me. I thought long and hard about being there when it happened, and was given the option of letting them do it after i left - i decided i needed to be there and i dont regret it one bit. Very quick, painless and peaceful for her. Her suffering is over, her last 2-3 years havent been very good at all. As i mentioned before, she was basically allergic to everything and had very bad skin irritations and infections. Beautiful natured dog though, and was excellent with our kids.

The drive home alone was horrid - think i was in a daze for most of it. There is a very eerie feeling here at home - like something isnt right, like something is missing. There is.

RIP Maddi

Sorry for dribbling on, but its been a rough day and evening. Thanks everyone for their support.

Condolances Felch- the "Drive" is one of the worst feelings I ever had. Our Greyhound Zak had a very slight limp a couple of years back. After checking paws etc for thorns, and rubbing his legs looking for obvious sore spots, we took him to the vet for an xray. We'd thought he may have pulled a muscle, instead he was diagnosed with an osteosarcoma (aggressive bone tumour) in his back right leg. Our vet gave us some pain relief medication and told us he'd last about 4 weeks.

We took him home and proceeded to spoil him for the next 3 months (tough bugger he was), all the time watching his movements, we had decided once he had obvious discomfort or any limitation in his movement we'd take him back for his final vet visit.

We had a set of 3 steps out the back, and one night he just couldnt come down. It was too late to take him to our vet so we covered him up in a warm rug and he stayed in the sandpit for the night (we stayed with him until about 3am...) Secretly we hoped he'd fall asleep and not make it through. However next morning he was still wide awake, but unable to get up. He had that resigned look which just said "Mate I cant do it anymore".

Herein lied the next problem- a 35kg dog we had to get down the stairs, through the house and into the car. Eventually we folded the back seat down, caried him on his earlier mentioned rug like a stretcher and placed him in the boot, with his head sticking thorough the now flat split fold rear seat, and on Mrs G's lap. Still get upset thinking of him in there, he too loved the car rides and still wanted to look out the windows.. :(

Got to the vet where the vet helped us bring him in. Gave us the lowdown of how it was gonna work, and too gave us the option to leave. However, we couldnt do it- he'd been so brave up until then, how could we leave him? Pretty confronting being there as it is quite tough knowing they are going, but deep down you get a sense of relief as they slide away.

The drive back home was numb...you really dont know what you got til its gone. I put a blog and some photos on my 'Myspace' page and we kept his collar with a framed photo of him (we also had a heap of photos from his racing days). It got easier over the next week, but it took a while for the habits (feeding/walking/car rides etc) to subside.

Took us almost a year to get another dog, now she is givin me the shits cos she is barking as I type... :D

All the best to choccies and Felch!

Hardest thing to do is the final goodbye, leaving without them is sooo hard when they have been such a big part of your life :(

Felch, i really feel for you. It's such a tough choice to make even when you know there is no alternative. I know exactly what you are feeling and whilst it is so very hard and will be for a long time you have to know you did the right thing. I got a card from the vet after i had to make the same decision you did and whilst it made me cry it also made me realise that i did the right thing. Here is what it said:

If It Should Be...

If it should be that I grow weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep;
Then you must do what must be done,
For this last battle can't be won.

You will be sad, I understand;
But don't let grief then stay your hand.
For this day more than all the rest,
Your love for me must stand the test.

We've had so many happy years;
What is to come can hold no fears.
You don't want me to suffer so
The time has come, please let me go.

Take me where my needs they'll tend,
But please stay with me 'til the end
To hold me close and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.

I know in time you will agree,
It was a kindness done for me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I'm saved.

Please do not grieve that it was you
Who had this painful thing to do.
We've been so close, we two, these years;
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

Thankyou everyone for your thoughts. Doing a lot better today, and have a feeling of relief in a way, for her and the rest of the family. The kids are doing fine, our 7 year old understands she isnt coming home, but our 4 year old doesnt quite understand i dont think.

We went through some old photo albums last night and found some great pics of her, so the kids are going to make something we can put up as a nice reminder of her. We had lots of photos of her as a puppy, almost as many as we have of our kids, lol !!!

That poem reduced me to tears at my work desk Rod - but it summed up the situation perfectly. Thankyou.

Ha ha we are working on you Dutchy.

Zak's racing name was Zelena's Jet. Did his best work in the late 90s early 00's. His results are here:

http://www.2ky.com.au/horse/results_known.php?name=ZELENAS%20JET&type=G

He was as durable as they come, but a bit too polite, he'd slow at the first corner and let everyone through then try and mow them down late. Paid his own way though, he'd just about have the record number of 2nds at Angle Park I reckon!

With his prizemoney we managed to invest in about 4 other dogs, best of which was Praetorian Guard.

Sorry to hear that mate and I know what that drive is like believe me !!!! The world just zips past you without reason and consequence when you drive home and a million thoughts and memories fill your head and your heart.
My house has gone from a 2 dog house to an empty house in the space of 8 months and I have to say even with a loving wife and 2 great kids, there's not alot better than the wagging tail and smiling face of your beloved dog as you walk in the door.
I get to pick my old girls ashes up from Animal Welfare league tomorrow afternoon and she can finally rest on the bedroom tallboy with her son tomorrow night for ever and a day. That will bring back memories too I bet...

I'm definitely feeling your pain Felch so hang in there pal.... :(

Yep remember Zelenas Jet well, we had Vibrant Vapour which was my first dog and ran around at the same time, just had a quick look and they raced against each other this night - http://www.2ky.com.au/horse/view_field. ... 11/03/1999

Sorry to hear what's happened Felch, all the best to you and your family mate ... I've been through it and it's not pleasant at all, but time heals the wound.

"Pedigree Dogs Exposed"
8.30pm – 9.30pm ABC1
Thursday 10 September 2009

A shocking investigation into the health and welfare of pedigree dogs. Two years in the making, Pedigree Dogs Exposed lifts the lid on the extent of health and welfare problems in pedigree dogs, caused by decades of inbreeding and breeding primarily for "beauty" rather than health and function.

Saw the preview and thought about this thread.
My father many years ago used to be involved in dog showing.
We had around 40 old english sheepdogs.
3 of which lived inside the house and were treated just as good as us kids as they were Australain champions

Yes, I had some exposure to the dog show circuit many years ago - and dabbled, indirectly, in cat showing a bit more recently.
Most people doted on their dogs and looked after them well, but there were those who got into it thinking you could make money out of it, rather than it being an expensive hobby.
They often caused problems and treated their dogs [and other peoples'] badly.

I remember when we bought our bitch from a Weimaraner breeder and they initially thought she was one of the least likely to show so she was sold to us as a 'pet'. After a couple of years they rang after seeing us at a Weimaraner club show and they loved her and she turned out better than all of the others from the litter and they wanted to show her and take a litter from her. We refused the showing but agreed on the litter because we wanted another dog. We ended up keeping Flynn who was born with an infection in his leg and numerous other complications and wasn't expected to live much past the first few days. We kept him alive and he ended up with one of his back legs about 4 or 5 inches shorter than the other one and with severe bone deformities in that leg. He was a great dog though with a close bond to us because of what we did for him. The people at the Weimaraner club saw him and rang us that night to tell us to put him down because he didn't fit the 'perfect' description of a pure bred dog from the clubs constitution point of view. After I told them where they could shove their opinions we never had anything to do with the club again. That scene just wasn't for us.
