I sat in the school assembly hall with about 250 other students, watching it all on a black and white 25 inch television, I remenber the images were terrible. About six of my mates slipped out while it was on for a smoke, got caught and suspended

Yep and another point is the Soviets never disputed that it was real, despite the high stakes.
They would've been first, but were more cautious in their approach.

They even have their own conspiracy theories. Most of them have been disproved though.

I was a long way off. But from what I have read. The weather conditions in Australia were not that favourable at all. At Parkes the radio telescope almost collapsed during 100km/h wind gusts and the conditions in SA were not that much better either.

For those that did watch it the TV viewers in Australia got to see history 0.3 seconds before everyone else in the world. The ABC took a direct feed from Parkes before it was sent back to space to a satellite then back down to the US

Inspiration for an enormously underrated classic Aussie movie, "The Dish". :)

Fans of Ten's "Rules Of Engagement" may recognise a very familiar face in this, although a bit less world weary than the character he portrays on that show.

We had to stay at school in the Shaky Isles and listen to it on the radio. Couldn't watch it on the telly until we got home and yes, the old black and white was very fuzzy.

Kindof like my eyesight now...

Why would you even be interested in the opinion of someone who wasn't involved in the space program in 1969 and seriously wouldn't have a clue?

I just laugh at the sceptics, none of them have one ounce of proof that it never took place, and yet they are prepared to believe their own crap.

Imagine being one of the three astronauts who achieved something truly magnificent and then have to put up with a lifetime of idiots calling them cowards and liars.

If I was Buzz Aldrin, I would have done more than just punch that wanker in the face.

I recall watching the whole thing on TV at home as my parents allowed me to stay home from school and watch it. Later that evening when the moon could be sighted, I went outside and stood looking up at it and thinking there were two men on that planet. It was just an awesome thought.

I'd turned 21 a couple of months before the event, so I was part of the new age, hippy, make love movement, but somehow I had forgotten about the not war part of it or was never involved in that side if the arguement, you see when man made his famous walk on the moon I was walking around the jungles of Sth Vietnam, looking for blokes wearing black pyjamas, trying to put air vents in him before he did the same to me, contrary to what you hear and heard, radios were not a big thing of the Australians when we worked, and on that very day we were busy trying to get the Nth Vietnamese to leave a bunker stronghold that we thought they should vacate and go dig anotherone somewhere else, now they wern't that keen on the idea, so the stubborn buggers made us take it from them with quite a bit of force, it wasnt until we finished that operation and were back in Nui Dat about 3 weeks later, upon going to the outdoor pictures one night, a newsreel showed all about the launch the flight and the landing, funny, that event seemed that long ago that night, that it really didnt rate at the time, maybe we had other issues on our minds.
I wish my remembering was as good as my forgetting

Don't know if they've included the "When we Left Earth" series, but that is well worth a watch.
It has an awesome intro sequence (as well as great footage all the way through).

When I get around it to it I'll be ordering it on blu-ray.
