Cyclone Monica

Postby am Bays » Mon Apr 24, 2006 3:51 pm

Has there ever been a more apt name for a cyclone?

I mean anything that blows that hard has to be called Monica, just ask Bill Clinton......

To my mates in Darwin and as a former resident of East Arnhem land I'm thinking of you mob!!
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Come on Tassie, you can do better than that! A most disingenious post. Hope your mates are OK but. My olds weren't too far away from Larry which cleaned up Innisfail.

regards,

Thanks REB, but as a veteran of a cat 2 cyclone I know the attitude of most top end residents in that when it comes to dealing cyclones - laughter is the best medicine. In fact my sources have already inflormed that Nhulunbuy residents have spent the last 2 days on the verandah watching the wind with beers in hands.

I am well versed in the damage that cyclones can do having first visited Darwin in 1979 and saw the effects of Tracey even then through Jingili, Ludmilla, Nightcliff and Alawa etc

And as little as over a year ago I was preparing for Ingrid, personally, I hope your olds were are OK.

This is a biggy and potentially the biggest storm to EVER hit our shores!
It makes Larry look like a pensioner's fart!
Luckily it has to cross overland before it hits Darwin which should get it down to a Category 4 or 3.
But just remember Cyclone Tracey was only a Cat 4!
They're actually asking for volunteers at work to possibly go up there and help which I put my name down for, I just hope the Lizard Lounge doesn't get blown away!
Have a look at the satellite image on http://www.bom.gov.au, it almost looks like the storm in the Day After Tomorrow!

Yeah it will probably only be a cat 3 by the time it gets to Darwin. Once it crosses the Cox peninsula it will go into the Joseph Bonaparte Gulf and maintain its stength to a degree, but based on the current projections it should cross the coast again between Gunn Point and Point Stuart.

By the time it gets near Darwin it should only be a cat 3 and the eye will probably pass just to the South of Darwin City.

It is taking virtually the same path as Max and Gretel that hit Darwin in 1981 and 1985 respectively. However they were about 100-80 km weaker than this baby!!!

Feel sorry for the people on Goulburn Island as they are catching it for the 2nd time in 13 months!!

Why are cyclones named after women?

When they come they are warm, wet and wild.
When they leave, they take the house and contents!

Thankfully not this time though.
For long you live and high you fly. And smiles you'll give and tears you'll cry. And all you touch and all you see is all your life will ever be.

You must hang with some strange women if you know a woman called Larry! (remember the cyclone that tore through Qld 4 weeks ago?)
Here's a full list of cyclone names, when they're used and by which centre:

I thought someone would pick me up on that. The joke was too good to pass by but should have been worded more appropriately. My mistake for neglecting the intellect factor of the people who use this site. Thanx for the site.

As I type it is right over Darwin but only as a tropical low. Will reform into a cyclone when it gets into the Tinor sea and moves towards WA

Crikey, you insinuate I have a low intellect and thank me for the site in the same post. Nice double flip with 2 twists and a pike there!
First time someone who's thought Larry, George, Fritz and Jack were girl's name has had a go at my intellect!! ;)

What about my degree of difficulty?

The "intellect" comment was intended to be in a positive, not a negative vein. I meant it to be more a dig at myself for a lack of research and memory, than a go at you. I've perused many of the discussions and checked out several of the websites recommended and I consider many of the users of this forum to be informed, committed and educated about the issues they write about. The issues as well are relevant, not wishywashy. Noones asking who has the best cheerleaders, which player has the nicest butt, where's the best place to buy this, that and the other. It feels like this site has many people who are prepared to "fight the power" and question the status quo instead of accepting current mediocrity in the AFL and media for what it is. In future I'll be more wary of how I write and try to use more emoticons to assist with body language and tone.
