That’s great.

Stayed with an old team mate on the weekend and he has recently had a day surgery for a clean up. The photos of the knee where it should be smooth resembles the lunar surface. He had it done three weeks ago and still can’t drive (very convenient when on the gas at the races).

He has to have it replaced if he wants any more treatment.

I've been getting these injections that can last for up to 12 months, they act as the buffer for the replacement. Last one hasn't worked as well as the previous ones so I think my time might be nearly up...

Thanks. My missus is a Physio, specialising in laser treatment, which has helped heaps.

As you say, these treatments only help to delay or act as a buffer for the inevitable. There’s some promising developments for treatment of osteoarthritis, but I doubt I’m young enough to benefit or won’t be around.

Everyone I speak to says "why did I hold on so long to get it done?" Few proviso's in that, cost, waiting lists, private health, self employment/time off etc, etc.

But I am an advocate of getting it done. It becomes a quality of life discussion. For me, I could ride the bike to and from work, but I couldn't go for a walk of any distance and being desk bound for work meant I was putting weight on and not sleeping due to the injury, then eating badly the following day and of course that became rinse repeat for me. I stacked the weight on while I was waiting for my 12 months private health insurance to pass.

As soon as the op happened I was straight into rehab mode and moving on with my life, and going back to where it was 18 + months ago before I hurt it badly enough to inflame the arthritis so much so that I needed to do something drastic about it.

So in short, I say, if it works for you time wise, budget wise and all other factors, book in!

Mine were really bad about 5 years ago and nearly had them done then. I was in constant pain, any activity (bending, squatting, walking up/down steps, ladders, etc) and they would swell up and take days to settle down.

The laser therapy from the missus really helped. The osteoarthritis is just as bad, but I’m not in constant pain, and can do things (within reason). If I overdo it, they are sore that night but are OK the next day.

As such, I’ve decided to put up with them for a little while more. Once they start affecting me again as before, then it’s time.

Had both of mine done and happy with the result. Make sure you do the exercises!!!!!
In addition to physio/exercises I used a set of pedals, sort of a poor man's exercise bike, available at Kmart for about $35. Put them up against a wall, sit in a kitchen chair and off you go. The closer you sit the more your knee bends, that IMHO is the secret. Good luck, work hard.
Cheers

I had Euflexa injections mid last year and they assisted but were never a permanent fix. It was inevitable that I'd finish up here and I really think if I didn't have to wait for a lull in work and the 12 month embargo on private health insurance, I would've done this earlier as the last few months have really been a struggle.

I've been getting Cingal injections for about 4 or 5 years now. They advertise that they'll last up to 6 months at about $600 a pop.
First one lasted 10 months, second one was about 14 months, third one was 2 and a half years, I've just gone for another in the last couple of months.

Will leave it to others who have had it done to specify what theirs were, but generally it’s a lottery, dependent on what your health insurance will cover, the agreement they have with the hospital and the surgeon. Then there’s anaesthetics, which usually have a gap.

About 3 years ago my daughter had bunion surgery on both feet, and the out of pocket cost was about $400 (surgeon and anaesthetist). 6 months later I saw the same orthopaedic surgeon to do one bunion, and the out of pocket cost was going to be $2,500, all because the agreement between the surgeon and the health insurer had changed.
