A nasty incident but I would love to read the inevitable workers compensation claim form.
Injured at work, yes.
Act of God, yes.
Preventable? All comes down to the circumstances.
Claimable injury? Good question!

It has to be, he was injured in his work place, performing his duties, no question about it at all.
