I had a Bathurst Monaro back in the days of unlimited speed in SA outside built up areas, and both my current cars would cope far better.
Generally I think about 130-150 kph is comfortable on open roads, depending on conditions.
I do tend to find it harder to keep focussed at lower speeds on empty county highways.

I find it disconcerting that anyone buys the propaganda of the covert tax collectors.
Moderate speed is a contributor to accidents if you are not paying attention, but it is the easiest factor to police and collect money on.

I always try to avoid them - they cause accidents! ;)

"Speed" itself is an arbitrary thing, and what is excessive is defined by law which is not always as scientific as it claims.

I have no argument with 40kph zones residential areas and would support it in the CBD rather than the present 50kph.
I do not intentionally exceed those, nor the general 60 kph limits on major roads in metropolitan and township areas.

My only argument is with the limits set on relatively uncluttered major country roads where a speed of around 130-140 kph could be supported with reasonable safety.
(See other posts I've made citing countries which have increased limits in such areas recently.)

Interesting that the straw that broke camel's back over the Hahndorf/Echunga road was the death of a person that was doing well over the 100kmh speed limit so I don't know what dropping it to 80 is going to achieve other than raise revenue for the government.

Interestingly, despite my general view of speed limits on some country roads being a bit low, when I lived in that area I rarely did more than 80 at the Hahndorf end of that run despite the 100 speed limit - it's surface was just too irregular. Yet it seemed that at least once a year somebody was killed in that region doing well over 100.
(That was between 1983 to 1996 when I had a small farm in the region.)

At the time I stayed below 100 on the approach from the freeway to Hahndorf, and on the Verdun end of the Onka Valley Road for the same reasons - bad surface despite the 100 kph zoning.

I'm probably going to get torn a new arsehole here, but I find that the speed limits set from Meadows to Echunga to Mt Barker and through to Nairne are, for the most part, arbitrary and confusing. Thus I have been ignoring them and driving at the limit that I feel is reasonable. Nowhere over 80kph except for the Meadows-Echunga stretch, which as far as I'm aware is still 100 anyway. I slow down for settled areas and go 50kph in Mt Barker.
