What gets me about this practice is it's the women who are doing it to the girls. Surely they'd realise how much pain they went through and wouldn't inflict it on their daughters.

I dont think we're going to bring in "millions of primitives" somehow. The best we can hope for is that after a generation or two of access to decent education these barbaric practices will be weeded out. Until then, charge them under which ever law is applicable in this country.

Its purpose is to remove the feeling of pleasure from the sexual act, thus supposedly preventing the wife from seeking pleasure from other men. This practice existed in ancient times in areas of hard climate where living conditions were harsh and tough mentality followed. It existed before Islam. The reason it has become associated with that religion is that many such countries converted to Islam later. A fundamental belief of Islam is "that which isn't prohibited is allowed" meaning in the context of FGM that no where in the Qur' an does it say thou shouldn't commit FGM so many have taken that as permission to perform it.
Basically FGM is cultural not religious. Islam has failed to stop it because it pre-existed in many of the cultures which converted to Islam. This is why Australia is good for these young girls. Australia has laws against this. By integrating Islam into Australian society we will ultimately create a softer version of Islam. This is happening around the world already.

Fair enough, I hope you are right but I can't see a "softer version" of Islam ever developing here. We are being conditioned to be more tolerant of Muslims e.g. check the rules at the Shepparton public swimming pool. Women and girls banned on some days so Muslim men can bathe on their own. This is not an Australian custom but we are forced to adopt it. Faaarking pathetic.

I hear what you're saying. This is something I don't quite understand. Why Australia has to change its values for the sake of migrants.
I'm not up with that particular issue in Wollongong, I live in Japan and can't just switch on the tv to get Oz news, but women fought for decades to be treated the same as men, how is it that's now secondary to the needs of another group? I'll need someone to explain to me why this is the right thing to do. I know about religious freedom and all that, but I believe that should be limited to the point where it begins to interfere with the rights of others in the community. Hard to comment without understanding the issue, but it doesn't look good from here.
