Electricity Meter

Postby MatteeG » Tue Aug 21, 2012 7:59 pm

Hey FootySA'ers- what does one do when your Electricity meter stops working?

My Nanna's new bill showed bugger all usage for the past 3 months, I checked the meter and it hasnt moved since the reading in early July.

She was gonna just ring AGL and tell them- I'm skeptical how they will deal with the situation...

Should she let it ride and play dumb? Is it their problem? Or will they charge her an estimated use type scenario?

I assume as it isnt her property she wouldnt be charged to have it fixed?

I dont want her honesty to cost her big $$

Any advice or experience on this matter would be good.

Cheers,

MatteeG

not electricity but SA Water went to great lengths and wasted their time at my parents house by replacing the meter after me and my sister had move out of home. The water usage plummeted and it also coincided with good winter rains to fill their massive rainwater tank but SA Water were convinced the meter was faulty

never charged them a dime. Mum was just laughing at these blokes trying different meters over a couple of billing cycles before giving up

They can only estimate if they can't access your meter. Play dumb.

Do not play dumb. Eventually they'll work it out and charge you based on an average/estimate.

Might be great getting a small bill right now, but in 6 months times getting a bill for 9 months of usage with 15 days to pay is not an ideal situation.

Maybe it can be moved just a little from time to time with a powerful magnet creating a new (low) average?

Id contact supplier and get a meter replacement. She will get estimated for the period it stopped working. Call back when you get the estimated bill and dispute saying you have made efforts to conserve power in that period, u might get a 15%-20% reduction in the estimate if your lucky ;)

If shes a housing SA tenant contact the maintenance call centre 131 288 and report it and they will sort it out for you. If she is a tenant and lives in the Parks/Port Adelaide area send me a PM with her details and ill get someone to sort it.

My mate's parents in Mount Barker had the same problem when they moved in. They'd replaced a house of six people who were obviously using over and above what the rainwater tank provided and because their two person usage was minimal by comparison they were only needing to use the tank water but the bozo's couldn't seem to understand that so they've replaced the meter five times anyway.

On the subject at hand though, where's Nikola Tesla when you need him?

me and my missus moved into a rental on a 12 month lease.

the first bill we got was $37. i was stoked, but just thought maybe we only just caught the end of a billing cycle or something, and our next bill would be more like we were used too.

three months later another bill arrived. $42. had the same discussion with the missus at the time you're having with us now. 'Should we own up and call them and tell them there is a problem, or wing it and hope they don't notice?" we winged it!

three months later, $49. same discussion again, same decision!

last bill upon moving out..............$52. moved out. that was about 3 years ago. made sure they had my updated contact details so if they did decide to charge us, they'd be able to find us and would screw with our credit rating etc....

WE WIN!
