Go for the eyes. Grab the dog's head on either side and drive your thumbs as far into the eyeballs as you can.

I used to go out with a vet who told me that the best approach was to croach down and snarl at it as loudly and scarily as you can. Most dogs apparently back off then because they work out that you are bigger than them and not prepared to be intimidated. You become a threat to their safety and they'll take the safe option and back off.

Easier said than done I reckon!

She said it works every time and even gave me a demonstration.

Is this what you are describing?

The same could have been said in favour of saving our fauna that existed before man arrived and brought the Dingo here with him.
That resulted in the biggest fauna extinction Australia ever experienced.

I like cats, but think they should be kept indoors - it can be done.
Our Russian Blues in the early 1990s, and the Siamese we had after them coped quite well.
I admit the Siamese escaped occasionally - she learned to take screens off some windows.
But she rarely went far from the house, and was then usually found sleeping in the sun on the deck.

Dogs are easier - all you need is a decent back yard fence.

I've mourned the loss of some of my pets longer than I've mourned the loss of some of my relatives!
They don't keep me here because I'm gorgeous and 5'10

True, but I'm not convinced there is a cat problem..
They would fit into a balanced ecosystem if we did something about the too many humans problem.. ;)

Yes I've seen it.
I'm not sure I fancy that as the answer though - it is rather unpalatable in several ways..

What a load of crap.
Which?
The "cat problem", or the idea that there are too many human beings on the planet and thus we are affecting our environment adversely?
Or just that we are discussing it?

I was travelling with a South African girl through Europe a couple years ago and she got a phone call from her Mum. When she finally stopped crying she explained her Jack Russell (called Lucky) got eaten by a python, 5th dog in 7 years. My mate's response that she should perhaps look at getting a pet python didnt go down well.

'twere a touch insensitive...
A pet Hyena or Cheetah may prove more durable though, while still furry and cuddly.
Small dogs of a domestic bent are not well adapted for life in the wild. ;)
