Old pile of bark chips - mould

Postby overloaded » Tue Jul 12, 2011 10:45 pm

I have a pile of bark/pine chips out the back yard that has been there for 2 years (uncovered), weeds are growing out of it. I am ready to use it. I have been advised that if I spread it around the garden it could be all mouldy?
If this is the case will the mould be harmful?

Should I use it or dispose of it?

Depends what sort of fungus it is. Some can be harmful, some can be harmless.

I'd hazard a guess and say it's harmless. Probably just a common grey mould symptomatic of decomposition of woodchips, which will probably disappear once you lay it out and the sun hits it.

Don't use it under any rose bushes, fruit trees, or vegetable patches to be on the safe side.

So if you had spread it out 2 years ago wouldn't it still have been uncovered ... or am I missing something?

As a pile, it retains humidity, particularly underneath the outer layer. Dark and humid, perfect for fungal growth.

Might be best to keep kids and pets off it as well until it's had a chance to totally dry out and the fungus has died back. Shouldn't take long once your summer weather starts to kick in.
