The Green Giant

I caught up with a mate of mine the other day who is involved with Steam Ranger and asked him why they havent had the Green Giant up and about to Victor in recent times, he tells me that 520 has been taken out of service due to the boiler requiring fairly extensive repairs due to rusting issues. Sadly Steam Ranger get no government assistance and any funding comes from what the volunteers raise themselves and any income from the tourist trips at Victor. They need to raise something to the order of $300 000.00 to get her up and running again. So sadly the Green Giant will likely remain stuck up in the engine sheds at Mt Barker.

So many good memories of Steam Ranger, it was one of South Australias best Tourist Attractions at one stage, yet like everything else the costs of running it increase and it was scaled back from Keswick to Mt Barker because the Government would not keep the broad gauge rail going through from the city to Mt Barker. Still the volunteers do a fantastic job with the little that they do have to work with, if you ever get the chance to ride them its an awesome day out for the family!
