Ban any car on the road that is 10 years old or over.

Who want's to drive anything over 10 years old anyway.

(Unless on the Bay to Birdwood)

You must have to keep up with the latest safety technology or you can't afford to be on the roads.

That would stop chilren from buying over-powered vehicles at very cheap prices.

Could it be that simple....? :D

If you say I cannot afford this, then catch a bus.

You don't need a high performance car to travel too fast, based on that theory you would just ban cars

Agrees with Ian - if they are 'stupid' behind the wheel they are stupid behind the wheel - no matter the size or speed the car goes.
I overheard some young guys a few years ago at our footy club bragging about how they got an very small cylinder late model car upto 170ks or so - and they were laughing about how they thought it was going to 'blow up' - not to mention that they were filming the speedo as 'proof' to all their mates

Just stupidity unfortunately :(

I remember the crash in the above link, and the outcry at the time over more teenage deaths on the roads, however, increasing the restrictions on young drivers would have had absolutely no bearing on this incident, as the driver had never held a licence at all and was therefore already ignoring the current restrictions.

increasing restrictions will only create more drivers that believe it is just easier to not get a licence in the first place and take the risk of getting caught. it will actually increase the chances of people doing the right thing being involved in an accident with an unlicenced, untrained driver, while at the same time punishing people who have done absolutely nothing wrong (yet).

I'm still driving the 1995 Audi S2 I own, not because I can't afford a new car, but because I haven't found anything better.
Even the Cayman S I looked at late last year didn't convince me it was worth the change - in fact the Audi is a better car overall.
It matches the Cayman S in performance and has the advantage of better grip from its Quattro all wheel drive system

Nor did the VW Tuareg and VW Tiguan I test drove this year convince me I should part with the 1996 Musso I still have.
I may have bought a Tiguan had it had a low ratio, and had it been possible to fit a 'roo bar to protect the car from expensive body damage in event of a minor accident.
Why would you buy a 4wd that couldn't have that protection fitted when running into a Wallaby in the countryside is fairly possible, except to please the repair industry?

Both my cars have done about 160,000 Km and are in good working order.

Just on the age restrictions...

Has anyone here HAD to get a job at age 16+ that requires a car?
Alot of kids have no choice but to work at that age due to life situations.

I had my Ls on my 16th bday and had my Ps exactly 6 months later and was driving my own car to work that day.

Just saying it could affect other areas if age lifted to 18+ eg. homelessness, criminal activities

Just a thought...

I think if the age was to raise, then there would be more crime from younger people.
Employment rates would drop again and prices of things would go up aswell. (mainly cause young people couldnt get the apprenticeships and jobs that you need a car for meaning the employers would need to hire older people meaniong paying more and that cost would be passed onto the consumer!

As wrong as it is, it is gonna be very hard, bordering on impossible to drop the road fatalities without basicly brainwashing todays kids so in 5-10 years time when they can get there licences they have it imprinted into there mind!

Many years back I lost a wonderful work colleague and brilliant rugby player who'd been married less than 3 months to a drunk driver at Christmas time. We were told the driver was so drunk the police found him sitting in his car giggling at Mac's body. Seeing his heavily sedated wife collapse, screaming at the funeral is something that will stay with me forever.

Whether it's drunk or drugs it should ALWAYS be zero tolerance and manslaughter at the very least.

Just as expected here's our pathetic equivalent that's being shown on tv...would be laughably soft if it wasn't such a serious subject. Hasn't made it to YouTube yet so hope the link on the official site works...just click the pic of the guy drinking.
