Heading to Qld via car in August and keen to stay a couple of nights in Northern NSW for something different, was thinking Byron Bay but wondering if anyone else has any suggestions of nice spots up there just south of the border?

You'd probably need to consult your bank manager before stepping out of the car in Byron Bay. I'd be stopping at Coffs Harbour - much more relaxed and fair dinkum. Less hippie/trendy/latte-sipping wankers from Melbourne's inner suburbs.

Dutchy Ballina is awesome. Lovely inlet where the river joins the Pacific. Good golf club too. Nambucca Heads is also prime scenery and a beautiful old original railway station with pot plants hanging from the awnings over the platform. Another sensational golf club and a nice spot to picnic on the beach. That whole north coast is pristine.

Thanks Gents, Ballina looks good, just for a couple of nights before hitting the craziness of the Goldy.

Coolangatta was wicked a couple of weekends ago - reflections on sea - nice place right on beach - some hot birds hanging around too

Agree, Northern NSW is pristine, we always stay at Hastings point, surrounded by national park.

Around the corner this place is great for a beer. pricey to stay though
