Who's been there?
Either for a holiday, work, lived/born there, etc, etc.
Thoughts?
What to watch out for, what to do, etc, etc?
What's the AFL standard like there?

Lived there for a year, awesome place to explore.
beaches, rainforrest, bush land, islands, reef, waterholes, waterfalls. Used to camp all around the place a couple times a month.
NIghtlife is unreal, cheap and backpackers a plenty, who love to strip down ;) in bars such as the woolshed!!
footy is ok standard, my brother said much like a good suburban comp here, no better than the SFL or GSFL etc.
very chilled out cruisy locals. Have been back 3 times, after i moved back.

Thoughts? It is a great place and I love Palm Cove / Trinity Beach which is just North of Cairns. Shorts and T-shirt get you into the Casino too. ;)

What to watch out for, what to do, etc, etc? Get a car to go up to Port Douglas, Kuranda and Pam Cove. All can be a good day trip. Do a reef tour ( about $150+ per person ), great day out. Spend a day by the lagoon in the city, restaurants have awesome seafood, go down to Mission Beach....

What's the AFL standard like there? Tyson Lane ( the ex-Collingwood player ) was a Captain-Coach up there from memory and I believe it is improving. Would be similar to A2/A3 ammo's.

How would it go for a footy trip? Heard it would be quality at night but not alot of pubs/bars open during the day.

If you get a chance, try to see the Cairns Taipans play in the NBL. One of the most imposing home records of any NBL team this year (pity about their road record).

Cairns itself is below average. Around Cairns is a different story.

Just got back from Cairns yesterday morning
was the wet season but still plenty of back packers around and a bit of rain didnt bother me at all.

The reef was still good, rainforests looked great cause they were all wet, rivers were flowing!

Only thing is make sure you take plenty of cash, all the adventure/touristie things are $100 minimum. Most well worth it though!

pag, on footy trip, wouldbe a ripper of a place to go and I think Portland may look into going there for this seasons footy trip!!
