Places to stay in Sydney CBD

Hi all,

Heading to Sydney over Xmas and will be spending the first couple of days at my Bro in laws way out west but was looking for a place to stay right in the heart of Sydney for our last couple of days so we can show the kids the harbor, bridge, etc.
Anyone have recommendations?
A nice apartment style would be ideal.
Even though we can get harbor side "seats" for the NYE Fireworks we'll be heading home before that as we'll be heading OS a couple of weeks later so dont want to spend a mint.

a slight variation here ...

Will need to be in Sydney during the April school holidays so will probably make it a week long family holiday.

Don't necessarily need to stay in the CBD, but anywhere close to train transport so we can get around easily.

Have done some initial research for accommodation and it looks like it may be difficult to find places to accommodate a family of 5.

Not that fussed about the type of accommodation eg. apartment, house, etc, and will try to source something no more than $1,500-$2,000 for the week.

Any suggestions?

Try http://www.big4.com.au. They've got a couple of holiday parks in the Sydney area, and you'll find that they'd be pretty close to train lines, so you can get around the place easily, and there's plenty for kids to do within the park too.

Exact dates? I'll see what I can find...

problem with Sydney is that everything is overpriced - and they think kids are always happy to sleep together in the same bed..chances are you may only get away with it if one of the kids is happy to sleep on a sofa or rollaway.

I've had a look at this thread, as I'm thinking of heading to Sydney for 3 or 4 days in mid May this year. I had a look at the "big 4" site, that appears to have a fee to join.

Does anyone else have any other suggestions re where to stay in Sydney CBD, and also some tips on what to see/do in the area as well?

Yeah, there is a small fee for Big 4 membership, but the discounts for accommodation and attractions are handy if you're a regular tourist.

The Sydney Travelodge is pretty good. It's on Wentworth St, which is a stone's throw (or a 15 minute walk) away from Darling Harbour, Chinatown, George St, Martin Place etc etc. Hyde Park is 30 seconds up the street, as is the Museum train station, which just about gets you anywhere you need to go (e.g. 5-10 minute train ride to Circular Quay).

If you're looking for things to do in Sydney (and there's a million things to do) try this first: http://www.city-sightseeing.com/tours/a ... ngposition. I'd recommend doing that on the first day, and going back on a second day to places you'd like to see in more detail. We got on at the Australian Museum, which borders Hyde Park.

If you're going with a 'special someone' try this too: http://www.captaincook.com.au/home.asp? ... B3CF46DC86. My wife and I thought it was easily the highlight of our trip.

I hope that helps!

Try here GWW- http://www.booking.com/city/au/sydney.en.html

Used booking.com the two times I've been to Sydney and got some good deals.

Stayed at a place 700m West of CBD recently and missed out on AFL on both counts as foxtel package was bare minimum and because it didn't have digital tv, couldn't watch it on 73 either!!!!
