Sport Holidays

Postby devilsadvocate » Sat Jul 03, 2010 1:01 pm

Who's done one?
Who has a dream to catch a particular sporting event?

I've done a few:

1. English Premier League - no 1 on my to-do-list in London was to see a North London Derby between Spurs and Arsenal. I lucked out and saw the 4-4 draw at Emirates Stadium in 2008. I'll never forget it.

2. Traveling to Turf Moor to meet JTC and see a Burnley game. It was one of the best weekends of my time overseas.

3. Tour de France - seeing the prologue in London.

4. Wimbledon.

Dreams:

1. World Cup - I'd love to got to Rio in 2014, but unless I win lotto, it aint happening. If England gets 2018, I'll be there without question.

2. Champions League Final 2011 to see Spurs

3. Monaco Grand Prix. I was there 10 days after the 2008 event. Still wish I'd worked my trip out better to see it.

4. Winter X-Games - if they ever hold it in Japan, I want to be there!!!

5. Ashes at Lords

6. Tour de France - follow it round in a campervan.

A couple years ago, my overseas trip included:
A tour of MSG.
A Knicks game and a Rangers game at MSG.
A Yankees game at (the old) Yankee Stadium.
2 Toronto Blue Jays games at the Rogers Centre.
The Div 1 Final between Bristol City and Hull City at Wembley Stadium.
A tour of Liverpool Stadium.
A tour of Allianz Stadium in Munich.
Watching 3 Euro games in Euro Fanzones in Frankfurt, Zurich and Salsburg.
Adelaide United vs Osaka Gamba in Osaka.
A shoot-fight event (Shooto) at Korakuen Hall, Tokyo.

And it doesn't class as a sport but I also saw many pro-wrestling events in the USA and Japan, including Wrestlemania 24.

Forgot about this one! I was there in 2002. There were 30 foot waves breaking on the shore. The Banzai Pipeline was apparently churning out 50 foot sets regularly. The locals said it was suicide. Nobody was in the water ans the even was postponed the day I was there.

Ohhh, I went to Wembley to see England v Czech Rep. Nearly jerked it over Becks.

That was the first game I saw at the Lane too. 2007. We lost 3-1 and Timmie Cahill wasn't even playing.

Shit result, but I loved every minute. I was sat in the Park Lane with a hardcore Yid mate I met in Thailand. When I first stepped out of the gangway, I was awestruck. I think I was silent for about 20 mins, just taking it all in.

I still get goosebumps just thinking about that moment.

Hopefully it's the same feeling when the new Lane is built and I return to see us in the Champions League!!

I would love to go to the Caribbean and watch a test series between the West Indies and the Aussies.

It's just a shame that West Indian cricket is a shambles at the moment.

I do one each year to NZ to watch the Bledisloe Cup
this year is to Christchurch and will be our 4th, previoulsy we have done Auckland, Auckland and Wellington
great fun, head over on friday, have a few sherbs, game on sat which includes a pre game function (free beer and nibblies), recovery day on sunday, we do some sightseeing (mainly pubs ;) ) and then home on monday
the first year we went there were 7 of us, this year there are 17 of us

Wellington last year was good as I caught up with Magic Kiwi who frequents this site

the best thing is the missus wants me to go, and all up with flights, accom, ticket to the game and beer tickets, comes in to around 2K

I've been to Melbourne for 2 Footy GF's and the boxing day test vs WI (96? i think?)

I lived in the UK between 2000-2006. Was lucky enough to see:

Australia vs Ireland in the combined rules game in Dublin 2000

Australia vs England 1st Ashes Test 2001 at Edgbaston

Pakistan vs England test match at the oval 2006. Luckily went on the saturday not sunday.

Lords Tour about 6 times (with various visiting friends)

Half a dozen Ipswich Town games at Portman Road (I lived & worked in Suffolk for a few years)

South Africa vs England at Twickers

Australia vs England at Twickers 2004

Bullfighting in Granada (if you can call it a sport .... was an experience but wouldn't go again .... very barbaric)

Madison Square Garden, NY ... did a tour then went and watched a pre-season game of the womens team. I love the Knicks but it was play-off time meaning they were finished!!

Yankees vs Oakland A's at Yankee Stadium.

I always regret not going to Wimbledon or catching a Premier League game. It was something I always wanted to do but never got around to.

The wife and I went to Germany for world cup in 2006. We took an extra 8 weeks off before wc and went to a couple of epl games at old trafford. We went on a 2 week contiki tour just before the wc and the night we were in paris was champions league final arsenal v barca. The girls all went to the moulin rouge whilst we all paid 300 euros and got in to the final. Was awesome!! Great result too. Then a few days latter we were in monaco for f1 gp which we got to see. Missed out on assen moto gp by 2 days but when we got to amsterdam a few of us lads caught a bus to rotterdam to watch aus v netherlands wc warmup. About 1000 gold shirts amongst 40000 oranje faithfull.
Since been to uk for more epl games and we are heading to rio for 2014. Couldnt afford sth africa this year. Would love to do a west indies cricket tour

Can anyone recommend any websites they've used to sort out tickets to big European fixtures?

There is plenty around that have the tickets I'm after, just a matter of getting around the ones that are a scam.

Went to Rotterdam in Holland to see the Socceroos play a pre World Cup friendly against the Dutch in 2006 score was 1-1 and we ended up in the same nightclub as the Socceroos afterwards!

Followed the Socceroos around Germany for the 2006 World Cup, got tickets to the 2nd round game against Italy, was amazing until the 94th minute...

Went and watched bull fighting in Pamplona in Spain in 2006, an awful spectacle and sport.

Followed the Aussies around Ireland for the International Rules series in 2006, went to both games and we were in the pub that Fevola got booted out from but didnt see the incident!

Saw my beloved Port Power play Geelong at The Oval in London in a pre-season friendly, that ended up being a prequal to the disasterous 2007 grand final. Match was called off late in the last quarter coz of streakers!

Went to see Milwall play Yeovill Town at the Den... feared for our lives!

Went to see Brazil play Portugal at the Emirates Stadium in an International friendly in 2007 i think, Portugal won 2-0 IIRC.

Not really a sport but went and watched the Cheese Rolling in Gloustershire in England! Crazy stuff.

Went to Craven Cottage to see Fulham win a 4-3 thriller against Leicester City (who had Aussies Danny Tiatto and Patrick Kisnorbo playing IIRC) in the FA Cup, Vincenzo Montella scoring twice.

Went to AFL grand final in 2009 the Cats vs the Saints. Trusted Tiger Airlines to get us there match day morning and they did the business for us!

Went to South Africa for the 2010 World Cup and went to all 3 Socceroos games, then stayed in South Africa and was in Johannesburg for the final.
