Nah, I just hate what I perceive/believe to be non-traditional Australian cultural sports aka Basketball, Baseball, Soccer etc.

When I'm Dictator of this country I will impse a $10 level on every man women and child that plays any of the above sports and give the money to what I believe the traditionaly culturally significant sports in this country - Australian football, cricket netball etc

Sorry about taking things out of context, I just don't see the difference between cricket and soccer, both were born in England and both are played extensively here and have been, soccer's probably been played here longer as have various versions of Rugby.
I just assumed from your comment that only sports made in Australia were acceptable hence why cricket should get the arse.

FYI Cricket has been played in Australia since the the mid 1810s - between the NSW Officer Corps and visiting ships - according to Donald Headon's book on Australian sporting literature, regular games were being played in Sydney in the 1830s and intercolonial matches in the 1840s. The oldest rubnning cricket competition to my knowledge - certainly older than Eton vs Harrow, is our own Princes v St peters Inter Coll match.

I haven't mentioned it before but Rugby (real Rugby that is not League) is ok in my book because it has been played since the 1830s (Sydney Uni)

Given that soccer (association football) wasn't codefied until the 1860s - I think, I'm open to correction here and as we know the colony of Victoria's sportsman of the 1800s Thomas Wills (Tommy to his mates) codefied the greatest game in the world (Australian football) in the 1850s gives our signficant cultural sports (in my opinion) Australian football, Netball, cricket rugby, swimming, tennis - justification to being protected.

Bullshit sports (IMO) basketball, soccer league baseball most of which are johnny come lately sports from the 1890s!!

As I said my opinion, won't ever happen because of NSW & Qlds affinity to League.

You're right about your argument having any sort of logic but an interesting discussion none the less.

IMHO Rugby League is more Australian than Union as it was always the more popular of the 2 here as opposed to in Great Britain.

I think your statments would make a lot more sense if you merely stated "In my honest opinion these sports are poo for no real reason:"
Also interested if your comments are merely from a spectator's point of view or a players as well?
For eg I'd much rather play sports like basketball, baseball, league, probably even soccer rather than a game of cricket.
Basketball and baseball appealed to me as a kid as you were always in the action.
Baseball shits on cricket as far as players sport IMHO and I played cricket for 7 years as well as many years of indoor cricket.

In regard to what constitutes an "Aussie" sport, I think you should give up on that one, unless you state that spear chucking and boomerang throwing are the only true "Aussie" sports. Give me a yank sport over most crap poms play any day of the week.

PS I have no idea how you came up with your lists of significant cultural sports, ironically netball is merely a bastard child. It was invented by James Naismith the same inventor of basketball. The only difference between the too is that netball is a newer sport, weird logic on that one. Christ, it was still known as Women's Basketball until 1970!

PPS I've split these posts into their own topic as they were off the topic of the BASA board being sacked which is an important event and deserves a topic in its own right.

Basketball has been played in Australia for a bloody long time now, it may have had its origins in the USA, but it has been a sport played thousands of Australians for decades.
Most country areas have had strong Basketball comp's for a long time, where I grew up the guys played footy in winter, the girls played netball, after the local cricket club folded both played tennis in the summer, but basket ball was played all year round by men and woman, other than 8 ball, there was no other sport until you were old enough to play bowls(I know the age thing with bowls has changed now).
Other country areas also have strong mens and womens hockey comp's, as well as baseball and softball comps and although these sports had there origin in other countrys, so did Cricket, Tennis, Rugby Union etc etc etc.
Other than Australian Rules, Rugby League Speedway and Two Up, what other sports had there beginings in Australia?
As much as I dislike soccer, and love to give supporters of the round ball game grief, I still hope the socceroos do well in the world cup, but not as well as the Boomers at the next worlds and Olympics . Basketball has been a part of Australian life since my old man was a kid (over 70 years)and does have cultural signifigance in this country.

Considering SA was only procaimed a colony and settled in 1836, that's still the best part of this states existance.
