Looking at the recent signings for the sixers, Im struggling to find a direction that the club is taking. Am I just missing it - or is this simply adhoc recruiting of anyone about?
Recent signings
Axel Dench - cut by Tigers (211cm, couldnt ave 4rpg last season, never shot better than 48%, more fouls than off. rebounds, more fouls than def rebounds last season)
Brad Davidson - sixers will be his fourth club since 03/04, fifth in total
Adam Ballinger - could fit in well
Brad Newley - a lot of eggs in a 50-50 basket (if it comes off excellent)

At least the Sixers arent signing 34yo imports whose claim to fame is scoring 14 points on MJ in one of his 58 NBA games - Jacquin Hawkins, the first import signed by the Blaze

58 NBA games? This means he had a career spanning about 9 weeks.

At least the 36ers didn't pick up this bozo:

AN American basketball recruit accused of sexually assaulting a woman told a court today he believed she was consenting to intimate touching.

Sydney Kings recruit Bryant Matthews, 25, is accused of sexually assaulting the 21-year-old woman after meeting her at a Sydney hotel.

The assault allegedly occurred at the Erskineville unit of Kings players Luke Kendall and Anthony Susnjara in August last year.

Matthews has pleaded not guilty to two counts of sexual intercourse without consent.

The woman earlier told the court she was having sex in a bedroom of the unit with a man named Stuart Brown on August 30 when she felt someone else touching her.

The 2.06m basketballer said today he believed the woman was "engaged" in the sexual activity with him.

Good to see Jordan Dodman, a North Adelaide Roosters junior get a full time gig with the 36ers.
Very big and strong lad.

Brod, let me assure you that as a private owner, MH is not interested in signing people who aren't gonna deliver notwithstanding he has a salary cap to work within. The sixers are on notice to start performing on-court (as is Phil Smyth) and behind the scened there is an enormous amount of work being undertaken. MH is not just the owner, he is running the show there now and he wants to get a return on his investment - which was not achieved this past year.

Watch out for big improvements being made to the Dome and being worked on with membership growth and retention.

If you owned the team and it was your personal money, you would want a return. Risk has a whole new meaning when it is your own pocket that is shaking. This doesn't ensure success obviously, but it does introduce a different perspective.

Back court looks solid.

Slim pickings up front I'm afraid.

Haven't seen Ballinger, but he's got size at least.

Certainly hope the 'new' team is more inspired than the new look...

Axel Dench- The big presence we've been lacking, wont be as good as Horvath
Brad Davidson- Good pickup allows Maher to SG- Good passer
Adam Ballinger- Good inside presence -Lot of boards
Brad Newley- If he gets drafted ATM they have hm going to the pistons as 57th pick, but cant see it happening, predict he will be a 36er this year

Overall, we are looking better and have made some good pickups - Overall I'd expect a finals showing this year

36ers finalise roster, sign Chappell

29/MAY/2007 – The Adelaide 36ers have finalised their roster with the signing of their second import position for the 2007/08 NBL season.

The 36ers can confirm they have secured former Michigan State Champion, Mike Chappell, for one season and could not be happier with the recruit.

"We literally looked at over a hundred options for this final position on our list" Head Coach Phil Smyth said. "Mike's credentials were at least on par with every other player in the same mould. What it came down to was the report's that we received about Mike's personality off the court. Everyone we spoke to gave him a glowing reference and stated he would be an asset to our club. In the end, that's what secured the deal for us".

Chappell has played in the NBL before with stints in Wollongong ('02), Canberra ('03) and New Zealand ('04), which led to him being selected to play for the Toronto Raptors in the 2004 NBA Summer League.

He also was a member of Michigan State University's National Title in 2000. Last season he played in Japan for the Sendai 89ers where he was a League All-Star averaging 23 points per game and 8 rebounds.

* Born: 21 January 1978, Southfield, Michigan (USA)
* Height: 207cm
* Weight: 90kg
* College: Duke University (1996-1998), Michigan State University (1999-2001)
* First played in the NBL: 2001
* NBL clubs: Wollongong 2001/02, Canberra 2002/03, New Zealand 2003/04.

Does this mean "He was the only one willing to sign for what we could offer"?

Glad Farley's gone, too much of a show pony last season.
