1994 NBL SEASON - 36'ers.

Does anyone remember the 1994 NBL season. I couldnt believe how many times, quite a few in succession i think, that the 36'ers lost after the opposing team scored a basket in the last few seconds.

Like it was yesterday - Rob Rose, Mark Davis, a young Brett Maher coming good, Chris Blakemore's Most Improved Player season, that arrogant d*ckhead Mike Dunlap shafting Phil Smyth and of course...

The grand final defeat in which Paul Rees was named series MVP.

My memory is a little hazy, but did we lose game one in the GF series when Darryl McDonald came up big in the clutch? With a drive to the basket?

Can't complain because it was the first year since about '88 when we were a genuine championship contender, though I think we overachieved a little.

Suddenly, the Sixers were back in town.

Then came the disaster of 1995.

And we still had to suffer one more year of Dunlap...

The year that i'm thinking of, Shipway was the coach.....maybe it was 92?? not 94?? It wasnt just in the finals series, it was pretty much throughout the whole season....they just repeatedly kept losing in the last few seconds of the game when the opposition would score right at the end.

Yep, 1992.

Don Shipway coached Sixers between 1990-1992.

Took us to the semi's in 1991 with Butch Hays and Mark Davis having stellar years.

Can remember 1992 most for two things:

1. Butch Hays coming up short in the clutch several times.
2. Coach Shipway cracking under the pressure and slapping a Devils fan sitting behind the Sixers bench in Hobart.

It was was Mark Bradtke's last treacherous season (at least two-thirds of the season before he went to play in Spain to boost his NBA prospects, yeah right) in a Sixers uniform.

(Why did we clear him for $100,000 when we could have made him sit out the next season? Pretty much handed the championship to the Tigers on a plate.)

What is it with 7ft centres - Bradtke, Wheeler, Rogers - and their reluctance to play in Adelaide?

I first got into bball around the early 90's and went to a bunch of games in those years, and still did before moving here. I was at game 1 of the 94 finals series. It went to overtime i think and DMAC hit a jumper or some free throws to seal it. Davies was and is my fav player, the CHAIRMAN of the BOARDS.

RIck Brunson who now plays with Seattle i think in the NBA.

We had all the stars and then they would leave to play elsewhere....i cant beleive rillie is still going...and also mckay played a year in brisbane too...struth....

We got Neon Leon from the Kings where he dropped almost 30ppg as part of his high-wire act. But geez he was limited - at both ends of the floor.

Jo Jo is right up there with Paris McCurdy and Orlando Phillips in terms of bust imports. Orlando could actually play but just wasn't interested half the time.

Jo Jo was a bum! He (and his agent) withheld the fact from the club that he was carrying an injury and treated the trip as a paid holiday.

He got a better work out in the hot tub in his flat than on the court.

Yep. When they introduced the team as they came out before the match - the roar for last-man-out Mark Davis is the loudest I've heard outside Cathy Freeman and Jai Taurima at the Olympics. 10,000 people went nuts in an enclosed stadium - the Chairman was certainly basketball royalty in Adelaide.

I was at the Tennis Centre when he dropped the clutch jumper from the hot dog stand to win the game in the 98 GF series. You could hear a pin drop - truly "Magic" (although it was against the Titans).

English was a classic example of the NBA saying of "matter of being in the right place at the right time". Played about 300 minutes for the Bulls in the first year post Jordan, although you wouldn't have thought so going on what he did here.

Anyone remember Cannon's import from about that season called Rodney Monroe, who was only here for one year but was one of the best outside shooters to ever play in the NBL IMHO.
