I’ve joined my local bowlo and having a great time so far.

I’m bloody awful but who gives a ****.

Cold beer and the races on in the tv in the bar!

Add me to that, although I only play night owls during summer. So I miss the races part.

We have a blast taking the pi$$ out of ourselves.

It's one of those sports that everyone can have a go at but not everyone can be great at. It's quietly addictive. Even my son (13) plays in our team when we need fill ins. He's got his own set of bowls and loves it.

Had my second roll of social bowls on Saturday.

Slight improvement I think. I went up a size in bowls and I think that helped. I have a bad habit of rolling my wrist over when I deliver. I think it’s from years of golf, where you roll through to create a draw shape. Sadly in bowls they come out as Pineapples and take a while to straighten on the bias. My consistency as a result is awful.

One of the old boys said to me… it’s not as easy as it looks. True where I aim, and where they go is often a long way apart.

The club put on a coaching session every month. So it’s Saturday for social and Sunday for coaching this weekend. Mrs C not amused!

Played Night Owls and some club tournaments for about 22 years before health intervened and made it impossible. Sorta take it for granted while you're playing but bloody hell I miss it, both the bowling and talking shit with some great blokes over a beer.

Night Owls at Henley were a throwback to the SANFL glory years, playing against blokes like Russell Ebert, Freddie Bills, Nev Mead, Ray Huppatz, Bobby Enright, Max James, Steve Curtis, Chook Barratt, Rooster Wallace, Wayne Weidemann etc, and even a few old umpires like Rick Kinnear, Jack Hilton, Mick Abbott, Vin Camporeale etc. Some great characters among them.

Ummmm dunno mate just pick up the cod look at the Jack and give it a roll. The coach dead set rolled his eyes at me.

His given me some very basic points and a set up drill to follow. Some improvement noticed immediately.

I could have said…. dunno mate, just thinking about heading inside to grab a beer I suppose!

The Aussie celebration was like a soccer player after they scored.

Midweek social bowls today for the retired and/or unemployed. Got a foot in both camps!

Was totally and utterly out bowled in the first game…. By a 94 year old……………lady!

The old dear was on a walker and held onto a stick to bowl, at least she didn’t use one of those cheats arms!

In the club rooms after the game today I was consoled to learn she was a multiple club champion…. In the 1970’s!

Seemingly holding my “spot” in the pennant 5ths…. Mind you it’s a strong club. Premier grade in Melbourne metro bowls. We fly in 3 blokes from Sydney every week to play 1st grade. There is money in bowls… who the **** knew that shit!

Only recently I knew this. I really need to get off the pi$$ on a Thursday night and start practicing.

Happy to report some improvement in my bowls. Nothing outstanding but at least I’m not embarrassing myself as regularly as I was.

Our pennant match on Saturday saw us take on Heidelberg this time at home. Having had a tie with them in round one. 2 winning rinks and 2 losing rinks, and the shots at the end of the match the same. This time we prevailed by just one shot!

168 ends of bowls over the 2 rounds and 1 shot seperated the 2 teams. Unbelievable
