Holden WAS Australian, but a very bloody long time ago, now ownership is a lot more American (and by a nearly bankrupt parent company) than Australian, and the only Aussie built cars they sell are the Commode and Monaro.
The current model Commodore has bits produced in China and other overseas countries at the expense or Aussie jobs, and the next model will have less than 50% Australian content. the rest of the fleet come from Korea (rebadged Daewoo's) and Europe (Opal's and Vaxhaul's).

Doesn't sound that much like a great Aussie Company to me, closest thing I've seen to a American owned car company this side of Geelong

apparently their is quite a push going on right now for Holden to become its own company, mainly becouse GM is in abit of trouble, and the fact that the US wants to build the Monaro (even though they wont be making any more soon) the Utes and a few other things, the other worrying thing is the fact that its so much cheaper for GM to build all the Holdens in china, and that may be the way the Commodore and other Holdens could be in years to come.
either way Holden brand is still more Aussie than Ford brand.

Just while we are talking about car and parts ownership and origins. Whatever happened to that engine invented by that Perth bloke about 10 to 15 years ago? They said that it was something like one quarter the size of a regular engine, used one twelth the gas but was actually a more powerful engine, or something along those lines. I remember General Motors bought the patent and designs and the whole package after he couldn't find a backer in Australia, then the thing was apparently "shelved" as the car companies don't want to rock the world's over dependence on oil any more than the oil companies themselves (apparently).
In this new age of hybrid cars and GM looking in financial strife, why aren't they doing something about this old idea that they have had stored away all these years?

Their V8s reace Ford engines.
Holden have a big car company in Australia.
Their V8s race Chevrolet engines.

Last time I looked not too many Chevs rolled off the production line at Elizabeth.

Just like not all Ford teams have the same engines (some run SBR Engines), neither do Holden teams.
Most Holden Teams run the HOLDEN MOTORSPORT DEVELOPED 5.0L V8 Engine
Larry Perkins has been building his race teams engines for years, since about 1988 i think.
a few of the smaller Holden teams get their Engines from Larry Perkins also.
GRM are also another team that builds their own engines.
HRT and Dodo/Tasman both use the HMS developed V8.
The only Holden team i can think of that still use the Chev engine is PWR/SCAR
Most the engines in V8 supercars these days, apart from ones bought from other teams, are Completley done in-house.

Still all the same basic engines, they start with the same block, heads, crank etc. ,it's just that some know how to put them together better.

Thats a bloody understatement, they are in BIG trouble, at one stage it didn't look like they would trade out of it.
Maybe Ford could add Holden to Jaguar, Volvo, Rover, Kia/Asia, a big slice of Mazda etc. as one of it's companys

Nearly right Sam, the Pontiac GTO will continue to be built in it's LHD version of the Monaro, but not in the US, it will be built in Mexico.

That may just happen sooner than you think, there are already a large number of Comodore components bein made in China instaed of Australia, but it's costing Holden a fortune in rework to some of the dodgy ones, one Adelaide company that made a particullar component before losing the contract to China is making a killing with the rework, instead of supplying a quality product itself.

Ford were building cars in Aust. while Holden were still building coaches to be pulled behind Horses.
For Donkeys years, the phase 3 GTHO was the fastest production 4 door sedan in the world, using Australia's own version of the Clevland V8, the Aussie Clevland was far superior to the US version.
Yes, Ford began in the US, but ever since Holden went from building coaches to cars, the US has had a huge influence on the so called Aussie icon. They both have a huge amount of American influence with their Australian cars. If it wasn't for American ownership and $$$$$, Holden would have closed it's doors before the VN was released, they were in more shit than their parent company is now.
