Fishing: What's your favourite 3 local table fish?

A poll designed to establish which recreational and indigenous SA fish species are most popular on the table.

The list is extensive so you can choose up to 3! :)

Mine would have to be:

1. Flathead
2. Bluefin tuna
3. Garfish

...although there's a couple on the list I haven't tasted yet...

(oh yeah, I haven't included squid/octopus/crayfish/yabbies etc. because they aren't fish...and redfin, trout and carp :ymsick: are introduced)

1. Australian Salmon. (Tazzie grown)

2. King George Whiting.

3. Large Flathead.

4. Squid.

(Anything that lives in the sea) :D

Mine

1. Flathead (I grew up eating it and I remember when I first moved to Adelaide in the early 80's no one wanted to know about it, it was less than 1/2 the price of the tasteless over rated KG whiting back then, how things have changed)

Daylight

equal 2 - 4
Snapper

Coorong Mullet (wasn't on the list)
Leather Jacket (one of the most under rated eating fish around)

Mulloway just behind the others

I voted

Yellowfin whiting - superior to the KG's in my opinion.
Garfish - yummy
Tommy Ruff - The unique flavour is mmmm, Tommies on toast for breakfast is gods food

Not a big fan of Snapper, find it too bland unless you really add to it.

I think so too. Fresh leathery is sweeeet! I think people get put off by their appearance perhaps...but anything that nicks your bait so often is worth keeping if there's a feed in it

I've always thought whiting was overrated.
My favs are Snapper and Flathead.
Addded Tommy Ruff as my third. Prefer a good feed of tommy ruffs than whiting, pluse they have a cool name. :)

I went whiting and Gar, could be in either order.

Third was flathead.

One fish I only caught for the first time a few weeks ago and tried the other week was Swallowtail.
They looked to me like small Nanagyai and tasted delicious!

Not so cool anymore - Australian Herring. Still, will be known as tommies for decades to come.

I voted Whiting, Flathead and Nannygai. Although you don't get much off them as they are all head, Nannygai is just so sweet.

The best tasting fish I have ever eaten though that isn't on the list is Flounder, so moist it just melts in the mouth.

Tommies on toast camping is also a great start to the day with a beer

Will also add that while they are great fun to catch, Australian Salmon are generally horrible to eat. What I have tried though was crumbing them with salt and vinegar chips, makes them not bad if fresh. Whiting is also pretty good this way but a bit of a waste if you want to appreciate the fish

That's interesting - I did a fair bit of fishing as a kid and was always told that leatherjackets were poisionus

They have a barb on top of their head which I believe has some form of toxin in it?

EDIT: Just checked, no toxins, just can pierce the skin.

Flathead by the proverbial country mile IMO. Whiting is over-priced, but not over-rated I reckon. Yellowfin are sweeter than KG's, no doubt about it. Also, these days it's now illegal to remove a Murray Cod from the water at ANY time, but by all reports (of yesteryear..) they are quality on the fang. ;)

Not listed are sharks - aka 'flake'. We've been lucky enough to get into a solid number of big gummies the past 3-4mths and they're superb beer-battered and deep-fried. :D My kids love it - "Tastes just like fish shop fish!"..

I voted Flathead, YF Whiting & Nannygai.

What is highly over-rated however is snapper! Especially BIG snapper that ppl decide to cook whole in a Weber-style BBQ! NEVER met anyone who didn't overcook the bloody things, which results in stringy, tasteless meat. :vom: Best thing to do is freeze the bigger specimens in 'steaks' then cut it into thinner fillets for cooking later on. It allows the fish to be cooked a lot quicker & retains most of the moisture. ;)

So too can their razor sharp teeth if you put your hand within munching distance, as some peanut about my size found out with a large specimen he was trying to dispatch a few months ago... :? Also heard a story about a young girl who attempted to "do a Rexy" and give her leathery a smooch before releasing it, and it took a chunk out of one of her lips. They look benign, but they're bloody man-eaters!!
