What would be the top-5 racehorses you've seen over the last 10 years?
These are mine:
1. Delta Blues
2. Makybe Diva
3. Northerly
4. Takeover Target
5. Lonhro
For Delta Blues to come to Australia from Japan in 2006 and run 3rd in the Caulfield carrying top weight then win the Melbourne Cup in awesome style was quite amazing (watch the run on YouTube and I defy anyone to disagree).
You have to give high rating to performances away from home. That's why I've put Takeover Target in 4th just behind the prolific Northerly.
I always wish that trainer Fred Kersley had accepted the 60kg Northerly would have had to carry in the 2002 Melbourne Cup because a Caulfield/Cox/Melbourne Cup treble would have immortalised the horse (and Fred). The horse was in rare form and I reckon he would have won.
I have 'The Diva' second because despite her imposing record she was unplaced in two staying races in Japan including one over the Melbourne Cup distance of 3200m.
Lonhro's simply has to be in the mix too.

Worst call ever:
Delta Blues: 29 starts = 6 (1st); 2 (2nd) 3 (3rd) places almost 38% of the time
Makybe Diva: 36 starts = 15 (1st); 4 (2nd) 3 (3rd) placed over 61% of the time

Worth noting that of Makybe Diva's 15 wins:
One was in a Wangaratta maiden; one in a Sale Class 1; one in a Ballarat Class 3; one in a Flemington Fillies and Mares event. Three Melbourne Cups along the way certainly something that will be tough to beat.
That makes her remaining record 8 wins, 4 seconds and 3 thirds from 28 starts.
I'm a huge fan of her without any doubt, and she won four other Group One's apart from the Cups, but wonder if her record is a little inflated without the Cups.

Completely agree with most re: Makybe Diva - which could win at any distance against anything.
The rest is a toss up but I've settled with:
2. Lonhro
3. Mummify
4. Takeover Target
5. Apache Cat

Not sure how four group 1's and 3 Melb Cups is an inflated record.... I'm confused

Swamp Donkey, my point was that without the Cups, her record is still good but not lay-down fantastic. 8 wins from 28 starts without the Cups and the restricted races is a strike rate of 1 in 3.5; certainly good, but there are better.
Don't get me wrong - I love her and love what she did but let's also be honest - her 2005 win was handed to her on a platter. Carrying 58.5 after 2 previous Cups wins, and having the track watered to suit her to the ground, was pitchforked in. Let's say that Viewed won the race in 2009. What would he carry in 2010? At least 61kg - and this allows for MD being a mare and the like.

You can't just argue your point by stating her record minus three MELBOURNE CUPS

its like camparing Geelong's record in AFL over the past 10 years without considering their 2 premierships. Makybe Diva was trained to win Melbourne Cups and she won more than any other horse in history. Your suggesting that I shouldn't consider her record in the biggest race in Australian racing, for which was trained to win

.
About the Viewed comment, that is purely speculative, hence there is no arguement. The fact is Viewed wasnt good enough to be in that position!

BC, Saintly ran in the late 90's. I'm not even sure it ran one race in the 2000's, hence it's not in last 10 years, hence it's not in my list.

Like I said at the start of the argument though - I was looking at her record without Melb Cups and without her provincial/restricted wins. As someone else noted she was beaten at the distance twice in Japan also.
My comment on Viewed was to note that, Viewed carried .5 kg less than Makybe did having won one Cup. Allowing for mares concessions etc, for her to carry 58.5 after two wins was extremely generous by the handicapper. Extremely.
Having said all that - I still love what she achieved, but just putting it into perspective.
