Australian Rugby Union endorsed Melbourne as the country's sole contending venue for the licence and called on the three bidders to join forces to overcome the challenges from South Africa and New Zealand.
THE three parties interested in leading Melbourne to a super rugby team yesterday declared that they would be willing to work together to produce one compelling bid to snare the 15th franchise for Australia in 2011.
Gold Coast and western Sydney yesterday criticised the decision. Gold Coast bid chief Terry Jackman accused the ARU of ignoring the game's grassroots in favour of TV ratings, while western Sydney bid chairman and former Wallaby Brett Papworth said it was another massive blow to the heartland of Australian rugby.
