Got some mates playing a golf day today and they've been firing me questions all day for me to check on Google. Anyway I can't find the answer to this one anywhere.

Who was the last golfer ranked number one to win a major apart from Tiger?

Your help will be appreciated. Cheers

I was thinking Vijay myself but cant find it anywhere to confirm it. Just thought I would put the question out there. Might have to guess if we can't find it.

Nick Faldo was number 1 between July 19, 1992 and February 5, 1994 and he won the 1992 Open Championship held 16-19 July so does that count?

Not sure if that counts or not Bobby. After some more researching I have come to the conclusion that it was Nick Price in 1994. Thats the answer I gave anyway.

Thanks for your help guys. You can delete this topic now if you want to.
Cheers

I found this:

"When Vijay Singh won the PGA Championship in 2004 and with it took the number one ranking"

So that would mean he was ranked no.2 prior to the tournament. So we need to go back further.

list of times players have held the no.1 spot

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Wo ... le_golfers

list of players who have won a major

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Men%27s_ma ... ip_winners

The 1994 PGA Championship was the 76th PGA Championship held from August 11-14, 1994 at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Nick Price on the
14 Aug 1994 PGA Championship winner -19 (67-65-70-67=269) 6 strokes

world no. 1 from
Price, Nick August 14, 1994 to June 17, 1995
Greg Norman February 6, 1994 to August 13, 1994

SO after all that research i'd concur with you MC and say Nick Price became the world no. 1 on the last day of the PGA which he then went onto win.

Cheers M80. I am led to beleive this was the answer they accepted.

For those of you playing along at home and are desperate to find out, my mates didn't do too well in the golf side of the department but they did however win the quiz side of it thanks to Mr. Google. ;)
Couple of prizes chucked my way for good measure too! :D

He became #1 because he won?
