I'm in total agreement with Jimmy but yes Goorjian is the best coach in Australian sport. It was a great Grand Final series and just wish the Tigers had have put up a better performance in the decider tonight.

How's this record for Goorjian coached teams in the Grand Final series:

1991-Perth d Eastside Melbourne (Goorjian)
1992-South-East Melbourne (Goorjian) d Melbourne
1993-Melbourne d South-East Melbourne (Goorjian)
1994-North Melbourne d Adelaide
1995-Perth d North Melbourne
1996-South-East Melbourne (Goorjian) d Melbourne
1997-Melbourne d South-East Melbourne (Goorjian)
1998-Adelaide d South-East Melbourne (Goorjian)
1999-Adelaide d Victoria Titans (Goorjian)
2000-Perth d Victoria Titans (Goorjian)
2001-Wollongong d Townsville
2002-Adelaide d West Sydney
2003-Sydney (Goorjian) d Perth
2004-Sydney (Goorjian) d West Sydney
2005-Sydney (Goorjian) d Wollongong
2006-Melbourne d Sydney (Goorjian)
2007-Brisbane d Melbourne
2008-Melbourne d Sydney (Goorjian)
2009-South Dragons (Goorjian) d Melbourne

Plus I think he's made at least the Semi-Finals (final four) for something like 20 consecutive years. Can't stand the guy but you have to dip your lid.

how can he be when clubs he coaches mostly leave the league, Eastside, Titans, Kings. I know the league hasnt had the best of years lately, but one man being at several clubs that shut their doors must tell you something about the man and how he goes about his business

Better add the Eastside Spectres losing to Perth in 1991.

Wouldn't give Brett Maher a decent go in the Australian side so thats a massive negative as far as i'm concerned.

What's the best coach? Not sure you'd be able to make much of a case for Goorjian making too many of those teams BETTER than another man might have. Never coached a seemingly poor roster to a good result in his life. If that makes a good coach then so be it. I rate the blokes who get more out of a side than anyone believed possible. Or is a good coach someone who sees a procession of players go to greener pastures? Goorjian isn't coaching the highest level but have many of his players gone to the NBA or Europe? Can't think of too many. He's got a great record, no doubt. And on that basis you'd have to say he has possiblyt he best coaching record of any coach in australian sport. But a good coaching record doesn't necessarily make a good coach. What makes a good coach (IMHO of course) is whether that coach got a better record than another bloke would have and by how much is how good a coach he is.

When basketball counts as a real sport you can bring this up.

Boy Goorj's record speaks for itself.

Kings were a basket case until he went there.

As were the South Dragons.

Wooden-spooners to (last ever) NBL champions.

Not sure how one can blame the demise of a franchise on the coach?

Tim Johnston, 'Fast Eddie' Groves and the like are a different story...

My comment was made relating to the way basketball, somewhat like soccer, has for some time been in a shambles in Australia. With clubs/franchises coming and going it is difficult to create rivalries and IMO be seen as a genuine sport until they get their house in order.

I hope with the advent of the new comp, like the A League, will next year start the ball rolling to a much more stable competition.

If it happens, Boon...

IF!

Does basketball have a white knight like Frank Lowy to save it from itself?

A couple of things: The NBL is re-structuring the league next season which will see team owners needing to provide a bank guarantee of somewhere between $1m-$1.5m in an effort to stop all the teams that come and go in a belief they can afford an NBL team.

The last thing I would want the NBL to do is to follow the A-League model. The A-League is a disaster and is losing millions. It's business model is being propped up by Frank Lowy and when he finally gets sick of losing millions the A-League will collapse.

Don't give me that worst to first crap! The South Dragons had a completely different player roster from one year to the next. And no Shane Heal :-k The way he coaches teams to play is what puts people off coming to games, hence the teams (and league) go under. Ultra-defensive mindsets are never going to bring the fans through the gates, no matter the sport. Ultra-defensive to the point of getting away with bloody murder on the basketball court, which his teams seem to get away with on a consistent basis. And don't get me started on the way he prowls up and down the court like a caged lion, castigating referees, players and crowd alike. I think his players win in spite of him, not because of him. Absolute A-Grade tosser. :-q

Looks like almost 70% of respondents to your poll would agree with me... Maybe it should have been on a Victorian forum?
