Overrated sporting events - Sydney to Hobart

Is there a sporting event in the world that gets more media attention than the Sydney to Hobart where there is so little interest from the general public? Unless you have a boat on Sydney Harbour or your house overlooks the Derwent, who cares??

What a joke it is, waste of space on TV, eg. news talking about it, general telecast etc.......

Wouldnt justify it by calling it a sporting event

Has there been any "anniversary tributes" to the 1998 race yet? That would have got a lot of news space, I would have thought.

No Spell_check, haven't heard a word about that and don't expect to. That's my whole point. The media and the public know nothing about the history of the event and don't care. Just the media bring out all the trite stories and then cover the race as if its the Melbourne Cup. No one actually gives a toss so I wonder why its the leading sports story on adio and tv. There are plenty of things happening throughout the year which have a far greater level of interest but no longer get any media coverage at all; Interdminion, Claxton Shield, just to name a couple.

The bit I saw pre-race was an interview with the skipper from the ill fated Winston Churchill. Quite a good interview about what happened.

Here's a link to that boats story that year....CLICK HERE

It was all over the news at the time of course, and the stupid thing about it was the organisers shouldn't have allowed it to go because they knew about the forecasts. There was also the mayday call that was on the news from the Business Post Naiad vessel.

It got a mention on the news over here...they said there was a wreath laying ceremony at the start in memory of those who died.

We also got a brief mention of a crew being rescued during this one but I didn't catch the details.

I agree absolutely, i have literally nil interest in this yacht race, and the thing i can't work out is why News services report on this in the main part of their bulletin and not just the sports part.

I even heard some yachtsman say the other day that yachting is the greatest sport in the world (because anyone can compete). Personally i'd rather watch paint dry or grass grow.

I feel the same about the Tour Down Under basically too, although i presume there's a bit more support out there for this event than the Sydney to Hobart.

Not bad to be in Sydney for start though as I was back in 2002. Our hotel overlooked where all the yachts harbour. Watching on tv is good to c the boats coming out from mouth.
