West Lakes 23rd may

Just for those who like to fish or read about my attempts at SWFF here is a little piece from today.
Arrived at the lake around 9am and after doning my Waders. And I am pretty sure a knight in shinning armour had less trouble getting into his suit than I do into PVC pants  .
Anyway hit the water and noticed it was very low in level .Not to sure if it was low tide or the water levels are very low at present .So thinking are there any fish in here after reports saying there were very few fish. And on my fourth cast bang I am off and bang on and off again two more casts and bang on and off .Some small Bream playing with my fly moving spots I pulled in my fly to notice that one of the fish had removed one of the flies eyes .
So not to bore anyone and several more moves and changes of flies with small bream follows and one of an unknown fish following a pink and black fly .I settled back to where I began and bang a very very small tiny tiny tiny bite. And that was that .
I ended up chatting with a couple of older bait fishers and chatting with them while I dried off. They were having better luck than me 1 STin the bucket of the high 20's to 30cm's. And lots of undersized Bream caught and released.

So what did I learn today yes the fish are there but are very hard to catch on flies.More work on my part to catch them I think I shall return to my old tricks of walking from one side of the lake to the other in my hunt for my scaly friends .
And as I drove home I noticed the lake was spewing water into the port river so not to sure if low tide had started when I arrived or levels have been kept low.

Cheers

Thanks Magpie in the 80's. What I didn't put in there were at least two 40cm Bream hanging around .And following my flies in from time to time .

I have gotten used to wearing waders, the sweating thing I shall over come .Because just fishing in one spot limits me to much, its ok when the fish are in plenty not when you have to work to catch them .

Before I forget
Go Eagles

MickyJ,

Out on a Friday sheer luxury!

I finally got out last Saturday morning I arrived before dawn due to me falling for the dad’s taxi arrangements. I forgot how hard it was to thread the fly in the dark, had to give up on the new knot went with the old. Consequently lost that fly early. :(
Lovely still morning not too cold.
Took a while to get back into a groove with casting.
Although, when you are all set up waders and all and get into the cold water pressure on the bladder gets uncomfortable. As soon as it was light I was amazed by the number of people that appeared. Runners, joggers, walker’s dog walker’s and householders waking up behind you. Then, canoes, kayaks, rowing boats, dragon boats and householders waking up in front. More people than in Rundle Mall today.
I was not very successful casting out from the beach but on the banks once it was light I could Polaroid the Bream in about 3 meter deep water. They were very interested when the fly hit the water but once they got close shied away from the Vampire, ](*,) I should have changed flies to check the others but by now I had to find a toilet.
By the time I got back there was even more people. I looked at the area by the railway bridges but it did not smell or look to good so I went home. :-&
No fish hooked but several lessons learnt, I think I will find a quieter water.

No worries Alaska welcome to the world of Bream frustration.
With waders I have found I have no worries of the people behind me .
Bream shying away is a common thing you have to tell your mind not to focus on fish you can see.yes I understand how hard that is took me a fair while to work out .
We are approaching a time when Bream are very hard to catch. But ST's should still be about and reports of Trevally and Wrasse (red rock cod) in the lake ,I have seen the pics .
At least u got out I thought it was to cold Sunday morning.thought i would try in the afternoon but after taking miss number 2 to fishermans market and then walking around with her while she did her photography assignment .I fell asleep when i got home

I do tend to try and stay clear of as many other fishers like bait people I can .but the lake is becoming very popular and you were at the northern end the southern end would have been busier .
Did you see any bait fish they appeared to be gone last week ?

I am in two minds when approaching winter what is the better time to FF in the lake .Warmer weather I get there as early as i can have yet to work out the cooler time of the year.
Yes I have caught fish on 4 degree mornings but i would rather catch them when its warmer.

keep up the good work .
cheers
