F1 is my pet topic. Lets see if it translates into dream team results. That will depend on how the mighty Renault team goes. Back up where they belong I hope.

Flying Finn won't change gear
By Chip Le Grand
March 14, 2008 KIMI Raikkonen promised us that winning the world championship would not change him. True to his word, he has returned to Melbourne as dull as ever.

People who know Raikkonen insist this is unfair. As his manager David Robertson recently told The Guardian: "Contrary to what you see and hear, Kimi is a really funny guy."

A real knee-slapper. Contrary to what you see and hear, Raikkonen had everyone rolling in the aisles yesterday as he droned on about Shell motor oil.

Of course, Raikkonen is not paid $43million by Ferrari to do stand-up comedy. He is paid to drive fast.

But even in the anti-humour environment of Formula One, it is rare to find a driver who gives better quotes when his race helmet is on rather than off.

And therein lies the Raikkonen charm; an oxymoron if ever there was one. He is so dull as to be different.

Heading into his eighth season, his monotone, dead-bat responses have become his schtick. Consider this sample of freeze-dried offerings from yesterday's press conference - Raikkonen's first public utterances since arriving.

How will you approach your first season as defending world champion? "We try to win for sure as many races as we can and the championship."

Could you tell us about the new tattoos on your arm? "No." Are they personal? "I wouldn't have them if they were not personal."

It is enough to make any PR flak recoil in horror. And according to Robertson, who has known Raikkonen for 10 years, it is precisely why young Formula One fans dig Kimi more than other drivers.

"He has never kissed arse in his life," Robertson told The Australian. "He has always just been Kimi. What you get is exactly how he feels.

"If you go to America you hear them all say I love Coke and I'd like to thank the manufacturers of the tyres and the engines and it is all a load of drivel."

There is another side to Raikkonen; one he saves for his family and mates away from the track. This is the bloke who loves a drink and races snowmobiles under an alias and turns up to public events dressed in a gorilla suit. He lives in Switzerland and is married to a Miss Scandinavia.

If he ever wanted to, he'd have some great stories to tell. But it appears unlikely we will ever get to know this Raikkonen. Not while he is racing cars for a living, anyway.

A key to Raikkonen's success has been keeping the two sides of his life apart.

Ferrari is said to have a greater tolerance for Raikkonen's booze-fuelled pastimes than his former employers, McLaren. Robertson insists Raikkonen has never put this theory to the test.

"He knows how to divide it. We have never had a problem with him," Robertson said.

"He has never been in anything other than good shape when the time comes. But he likes to live, too. That is why is has such a hell of a youth following. He likes a drink. He is Finnish.

"If you find a Finn who doesn't like a drink you have done an amazing job. There is a cultural thing. But he is not a binge drinker.

"He has never forgotten his mates and never outgrown them. He goes out to a party and has a good drink and the next day he is up and at 'em snowboarding or whatever. The day after that he is in control at 200km per hour."

With alcohol abuse in elite sport a hot-button issue, Raikkonen was yesterday asked how he managed his thirst for lager with the demands of F1.

"I do what I like. I don't need to explain it," he said.

That's the Raikkonen we love.

I saw that article published in a sport magazine here in the UK. I love his attitude. So many sports stars check their personality in and pick up the media based cliche wanker personality that drives us all nuts.

I wish I'd got my crap together and got on the dream team.

Anyhoo, Robert Kubica has claimed his first F1 pole after going fastest in the top 10 qualifying at Bahrain today. Great effort by a very talented driver.

Webber starts from 11th.

Not sure if anyone saw the qualifying, but the stands along the main straight were about 5% full. I kid you not - there were about 28 people there and that's it. Well done Bernie Eccleston you cash grabbing wanker.

Still third, should have sold Renault before their value dropped.
