Heartstarter Nov 25th West lakes Salt water fly fishing

Postby Mickyj » Sun Nov 25, 2007 11:25 am

I arrived at west lakes just before 6.30 am .Started chatting with a couple of lads I'd seen before then headed off.
Arrived at one of my favorite spots and was straight away casting at small to medium Bream .With no luck maybe one or two follows getting pissed off.I spied a small Mulloway of about 60cm's and cast at him with no luck .
Checked my watch it was 6.55 not wanting to get even more pissed off with these bream I headed off once again .I moved past the shallow water I still haven't got waders yet :-[.
Settled on some deeper water with concrete steps in the distance I spied two guys fishing one was land based using i assumed lures. The other was sitting and casting lures at pontoons on the other side of the lake in his pedal kayak.
I turned my back on the land based guy and cast my pink and white fly out again into the water .Walking backwards as I cast i made my way towards (if thats poss :o)this other guy.Just before I reached him he landed a nice bream on a SP.
I decided it was time to change my unproductive fly and walk back the way I came ;).
After a small chat with the other gent I tied on a fly i tied the week before I didn't like it and swapped to a White Bass Gurgler .
While all the above had been going on the small bream/bait fish had been jumping .Both the other gent and myself had thought mulloway .Neither of us had any success chasing them that morning so back to fishing.
I decided to fish the Gurgler fast as I had read about whiting taking this fly fished like that.I cast out near were the action was and turned to watch the kayak pedal off way in the distance and think wonder if he caught a mulloway .
Turned back and stopped pulling this fly and WAM BAM shitten hell what was that .All I can say was this fish jumped out of the water to the left side of my fly .And when I say it hit my fly it landed on top of it and was gone .Well this fish could have been a small mulloway or the LARGEST KGW that god had ever made or SOMETHING else .With a yell ringing in my ears of they like what your using I once gain put the gurgler near the circles two quick strips stop and once again WAM BAM from the side jumping way out of the water a fish of about the same LARGE size did exactly the same thing again .
Heart pounding the water went quiet I thought you had your chance and stuffed up again
So with a lull in action I walked back and showed the SP'S guy what I was using and what type of fly it is etc .Described it tied to catch Bream etc.
Disappointed I started to walk back to my starting point and my car .BUT once again the feeding frenzy circles etc started again .So I thought YESSSSSSS I will try again.
And this time WAMBAM I'm on YESSSSSS I yelled and that lasted for 5 seconds.Back out quickly again and WAMBAM I'm on again yesssssss 5seconds latter gone.
But I saw what these fish were Salmon Trout (larger than what I caught before on fly)my god you should have seen them once hooked the gill covers were opened it was fantastic until they spat the fly.And they were gone. :-[
And i checked the hook sharp as the day I tied it.
So i lost the FOUR LARGEST fish I could have landed in my short history of SWFF.Was I pissed off no I was happy ,why was i happy because what I had tried ALMOST worked. In other words I tried something new and learn't another SWFF lesson.
Getting ahead of myself I walked back the way I had come and scarred a few small bream and that was my morning at what my wife calls my second home.

Cheers
Mickyj

If I told you that Westsider I would have to kill you :Hangman: .
Lets just say its a spot that I normally don't fish very long in because the wind normally blows too much for me to cast into.
But unlike Bream the Salmon move a lot go looking for fish jumping and circles in the water mate.
